Broken heated grip again

I just want to tell you guys thanks for the information in this forum. Today, about 50 miles from home, the throttle cable gave up the ghost. I immediately remembered that the cause of this might be in the grip. I opened it up and yep, the plastic tab broke. I couldn't remember what you guys said to do to fix it, so I did my own McGyver technique. I just swapped the pull cable with the push cable. I adjusted the cable tension to allow as much slack as possible. It idled a little high at first, but she got me home. Took 10 minutes from the time she let go until I was headed back down the road. Thanks guys for the heads up. These are heated grips, so I am going to try and patch this up and keep them.

OK, I tried calling a dealer and they are actually going to call Corporate Triumph in Georgia and ask if this failure can be covered by as a warranty claim. That being said, I am not going to dump these grips yet. If they will heat, I am going to try and use them. Here is what I did.

Tried several ways to reinforce the cable end, but nothing helped. So, I got out the dremel tool and ground on the grip. Now, I have a new fabbed place for the pull cable. The return cable is laying loose. If the throttle sticks, I have enough since to hit the kill switch. If this mod fails, then ISO Grips from Kuryakyn will be next.

As expected, The dealer never called me back. I did find out that you can buy just the right Heated grip for about $90.00.
 
U have a 1 year warranty on the heated grips I replaced mine 3-4 times all under warranty if ur dealer don't check for u try another
 
Hi guys ,Have just found this thread i wish i had seen it in September as mine broke 30 miles from the hotel we were staying at in southern France about 1000 miles from home ,the recovery company that came did try to fix it then went away quickly when i started it the throttle was on full so i cut it out and ripped of what they had done and fixed it my self ,we took 45 Min's to get back to the hotel .We looked on the net and found a Triumph dealer 2 miles down the road (luckily as there are not many in France)I have nothing but good to say about the people there they looked after us very well ,they did not have a new grip to fit the Rocket but took a new one of a new bike in the showroom possibly a Bonnie ,they fitted it for me gave us coffee in all it took 2 hours .The end result was we carried on with our holiday with no problems.

The cost was about £38 /$50 which to me was amazing i have not bothered to go to the dealer here as the grips are 18 months old .

I would not ride that bike like that if I were you.....Unless you never twist the throttle to full power.

I think it would be hard to hit the kill switch in the first 3 gears at 3/4 to full power.

Would it be possible to put a return spring near the throttle body for the return cable???

I would hate to hear you got hurt over a cheap piece of plastic.

I know you have an R3, the main reason we have this trouble is that the return springs of 3 throttle bodies are pretty stiff. We all know it tires our wrists as well.
 
Well after 18000 miles and 3 years with my head buried in the sand, thinking it wouldn't happen to me, PING. Exited a roundabout today and felt that ping through the right hand and no throttle. I'm not willing to pay 60 odd quid to T for a heated grip with a fairly stressed plastic part that meets metal which is effectively made of cheese.

I was only a few miles from home when it failed and just took the open cable out and operated it by pulling between my fingers. I cannot believe how fragile the T part is where the cable mates. Shame on you Triumph.

Ordered this to replace as I can't face Scottish weather without heated grips!!

Heated gloves beat heated grips any day for comfort. There are some hassles with wiring and cabling though, but for longer runs I wouldn't dream of going without the gloves, heated grips just don't cut it, at least not without something like this http://www.barkbusters.net/products/290.html

My heated grips are still OK, but then again I haven't used them that much. Still have the original in the bottom of my pannier in case it goes, though, but just knowing the ones I have are a time bomb is leading me to think about getting new grips - maybe some Avon chrome ones with integrated heat demons, or Kuryakyn Iso-grips and some heat demon solution.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the giant wheel that came with the OEM heated grips to adjust the heat, either, a big black butt-ugly box on the handlebars isn't pretty.
 
Yeah agreed, heated gloves are so much more effective. I don't commute on Bertha when the weather isn't great, she's purely for pleasure riding and holidaying these days maybe the odd commute when it's sunny.

The grips do add comfort when there's a slight chill. If I was doing serious distance or winter commuting then yeah, it'd be gloves all the way.
