Black Drive Shaft Oil

Sludge in the final drive? Really? Is this typical or is this just from a particularly dirty environment? I'm running the original factory stuff at 16,000 miles and it still has the clear caramel color to it. Had alot of shaft driven bikes over the years and never have actually "changed" the drive lube. I've added a few CC's just to top off a couple of them and have NEVER seen the oil turn "black". Thats a new one for me.

mine was black at 4500 when i changed the oil i flushed the shister out of it then i put in ams 75/90 syn oil and i change it when i change the engine oil !!

Well theres a few drama's now associated , I took it back yesterday , over two problems .
1-- rear brake grinding , disc bluing , calipers and disc hot .
2 --- Oil turned black again after 500 klm

Well they had the bike for couple hours , , the service manager said , we checked the breaks nothing wrong there not rubbing , sliders everything working ok .

The oil well the reason for that he said is Triumph have told them to change the oil to Motul , i said well your mechanic changed it at the service 500 klm ago and that was'nt Motul that was in it , and your guy told me on the phone it was'nt normal .

He should'nt of told you that he said cos slight discoloration is normal he said, I asked what after 500 klm . yes he said theres nothing wrong with the bike .

So i drive home the 40 klm , got home , once i was off the main road in my quiet street i went to first gear and listened sure enough i could hear the brakes rubbing , pulled in the garage and felt the disc and calipars , TOO HOT TO HOLD YOUR HAND ON .

aNYWAY AN HOUR LATER I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALER , (not triumph ) but they have done a lot of work on bikes in the past for me and know me .

Only this time i did'nt use the back brake at all , pulled in and they were very warm

I asked them for there unbiased opinion , both there mechanics laughed , said what a crock of ****e , both said if you hav'nt used the back brake , how come the back is warm but the front is cold .

One suggested to me that its more than possible , that the disc has been running so hot (its started to blue ) that the aluminium casing from the drive shaft has absorbed the heat and thats what turned my oil black .

Any how armed with two indipendent mechanics , plus what a couple of mates have said , i got pissed off , I rang the dealer asked for the service manager , and told him i had got home the breaks were hot and i'm not happy , i was told by him again , that ALL BRAKES get hot ,

Anyway i told him in no uncertain terms that is bollocks , its a safety issue , and the bike is coming back on MON i want a loan bike and i don't want it back until its sorted.

Don't know what im more pissed about , actually doing faulty work , or trying to fob me off that its normal . , I went in yesterday and was very nice about it all, i took there word that they had done a thourough check and all they done was pissed in my pocket

Far has i'm concerned they can replace the disc and calipers , . and if in a thousand klm the oil is black AGAIN they can replace the drive shaft . .
