Hi all,

Just doing some investigation into the interchangeability of engine/parts. Long story short, I have a black engine (2011) which may have a stuffed head, and a mate of mine has a stuffed transmission in a silver engine (2005). I have found a second hand silver engine at a good price and am wondering if the older silver engine head will fit the black engine?

If I can use the head and he can use the rest we can split the cost which would be handy. There is a part number change between the silver and black blocks and heads at engine number 242555, which makes sense as the difference is at least the colour of the parts. But the head gasket also changes part number, but this is at engine number 254213, so my powers of deduction tell me that this means there are black engine with the older gasket in them, meaning the heads are interchangeable. I am hoping the part number change in the gasket represents a superseded part and not a change in engine design.

I'd love to hear anyone's experience with this issue. Cheers

Yes, the head gasket change is an updated gasket, new style gasket will fit all gen1 motors.....
When using the transmission in another motor, do not mix and match gear parts between the 2 transmissions, use the complete 2 shafts with gears and shift forks out of the good trans. Norm

The original Harley Davidson aerosol can of semi wrinkle black ( for 2006 to 2017 twin cams) is a perfect match. Clean the head well, wipe down with prepsol, pre heat to 30 deg c , two or three light coats and you have a black head. 🙂 Also unscrew the oil gallery restrictor and swap them. Hope this helps.
