I had a look at Triumph fitting instructions , looks very easy but what is the configuration of the connecting pins behind the plug flap.

Easy...you can't plug it in wrong.

If your asking about the plugs on the wire harness the are blade type in a T configuration, if the receptical it takes a DIN or Powerlet style plug which is smaller than a standard lighter socket.

You need a multimeter. A cheap one will do. Positive must go to the middle pin.
