Aux Power for GPS

I apologize if this has been asked before but my search turned up nothing.

I have a power adapter for my GPS and am about to install it on the R3 (it's a fixed unit, not a cigarette lighter style) and I need to find power that is only on when the bike is running. Can anybody tell me the best place to pick up power?

If you don't have heated grips, there is an unused plug under the tank. The service manual should help you ID it. I used this plug to power my autocom system. It is switched.
 
If you are planning to add additional electrical bling, I would suggest that you invest in an Eastern Beaver fuse panel. Jim has a 3 circuit and an 8 circuit solution. The 3 circuit solution come in an all-switched or a 2-switched/1-unswitched configuration. The 8-circuit solution, the PC-8, comes in a 6-switch/2-unswitched config. This is what I use.

Also, while you have the tank up, you might as well install the H4 headlight relay kit. This will save your ignition switch with the added benefit of brightening your headlights significantly. Jim has a Rocket specific kit offering.

These are really quality components offered by a Canadian living in Japan. I have no connection with Jim at Eastern Beaver other than being a very satisfied customer.

+1 on the PC8 recommendation. Wired my GPS, CC, a power outlet and some led accents to it. Get it or build yourself a fuseblock with a relay--you know the GPS won't be your last electrical add-on. I also did the H4 headlight relay from Eastern Beaver to save my ignition switch and then moved the switch over to left side/rear of engine. Happy with these three mods.
Keep us updated with what you do, especially if you make your own fuseblock/relay setup.
 
Now you've got me curious... What's the deal with the headlight relay and the ignition switch?

I'll post some pictures when I get to work on my fused outlet box.

Built my first power box only to discover it was slightly too thick to fit anywhere under the seat.
Back to the drawing board.

Search for threads on the H4 Headlight Relay.

The bottom line is that the headlight circuit passes the full load through the ignition switch. This has led to many, many ignition switch failures where the solder joints have literally melted away, most at very inopportune times.

The relay kit bypasses the ignition switch to allow the headlights to be powered directly from the battery resulting in saving your ignition swith and greatly improved brightness from your headlights.

With an 07 model, you are at a significant risk of experiencing this failure.
 
Good to know. My 07 actually has no ignition switch but has a KIL keyless ignition. I guess the same thing applies though.

..if ya can't find room for the fuse box, you could always get 3CS he sells..that's what I put in mine..it tucked in behind the battery box..2 unswitched and one switched circuit I believe..
