05 rocket 3
I have a 2005 Rocket 3. I'm having an issue with it turning & firing. It will turn but only for a second.

At the end of last year, I had it inspected and the oil changed I was using it fine without any issues. Then one day it just started giving me a hiccup of not wanting to start, but after an attempt or two, it would still start. It let me sit at work one day & a mechanical-minded coworker of mine helped me get it started, he noticed my negative terminal was slightly loose. We tightened it & it started right up. Then a few days later it let me sit at work again this time everything was still tight & the battery read fine on the multi-meter so he got it started by jumping the starter. He came over one day to help me diagnose it & we concluded that the starter might not be working properly, at this point, it was turning with no issues but wouldn't fire. After 5 or so attempts the battery didn't have enough to turn it over.

I found a forum about the starters, replaced it & no issues with the starter not actuating. Honestly, the old one didn't look too bad.

Ever since then I have been having issues with it actually turning & firing. I have since done the following

-had the battery load tested by two places (it's fine & just over 2 years old & has been on a charger all the time)

-Hooked it to my car battery still no difference, also tried a Marine battery with 500+ CCA no difference

-checked the relays & tightened some adapters just in case. I also saw a thread about adding a 2nd relay to the starter to take the load off. That has not made a difference either

- New starter jumped with cables (works as it should)

- Followed the cable from the starter to the battery, I can't find anything loose.

-Starter selinoid seems fine

-Lifted the tank & made sure nothing seemed loose

- Emptied old gas & filled with new gas

-Hooked jumper cables directly to the starter to the battery, just with the + & also with + & - hooked up, no difference

-I'm going to try tonight pulling a spark plug to see if it's hydro locked.

-The previous owner changed the headlights to LED as well.

When I try to start it now I get a slight turn and just a click the headlight does go out but the gauges do not reset just the fuel pump turns on and off. I'm willing to give anything a try to get this to work I am not a big mechanic but I can figure things out with YouTube and being told what to check for but any advice dumb it down for me as I simply might not know what things are called.

it sounds more like bad battery to confirm you need to monitor volts while cranking.
we have seen a lot of guys with bad batteries that were told was good.
anyway if it drops below 9 volts then battery is bad.
it also sounds like the wire at the starter relay might not be carrying the load and you might need the extra starter relay.
if you are jumpering the starter solenoid connector and it is turning over then the extra starter relay will help.
