Advice required

I am after wiring in the 3.5mm audio plug on my Garmin Zumo 660 into a waterproof socket, rather than into the socket which is hard wired from the headset and which is just dangling out from the front of the saddle like a loose wire.

I phoned Garmin UK, and they tell me there is no such thing.

I'd love to prove them wrong, but playing about on the internet for a couple of hours has proved totally fruitless.

Does anyone out there know of any automotive or marine 3.5mm socket that I could use?
 
very few manuafactuers will claim water PROOF, but resistant... thats a different story,

There are waterproof marine sockets that are intended to connect iPod/et. al to a marine radio...were you looking for the connection to be waterproof while it is connected to the 3.5mm? (which would imply a gasketed twist-lock connector) Or just waterproof while it's dangling out on the bike? West Marine p/n 7895618 has a rubbber cap over a 3.5mm socket and RCA connectors at the other end - you'd need to remove the RCA's and connect to your 660 connector wiring but the exposed end is waterproof. It's similar to the one Regulator posted but with a more robust waterproof cover (it's designed to be installed on the bridge of a boat, exposed to the elements).

What I have at the moment is a female socket that is hard wired from the Zumo cradle and a male headphone jack that is hard wired to my moulded ear plugs.

It works fine, but I don't like the socket just dangling from under the saddle and wanted a socket that could be permanently fitted into the fairing of my ST1300, so when I get on the bike I can plug directly into something that looks like it belongs there, not just an afterthought.

As such it would need to be waterproof when not in use, so no water collects in it, to catch me out when I plug in.

I don't think it would need to be waterproof whilst in use.

So, what I would need is something like Cap. Rich or Reg has posted up, with a male headphone type jack on the other end instead of RCA plugs.

Would it be possible to adapt one of those? (not by me, I hasten to add - by someone who knows what they're doing)
 

Not sure how your install is currently set up, but the RCA jacks are just 4 wires: Left Channel, Right Channel, and 2 Ground (one for each channel). Should be simple enough to take your existing hardwired connector (the one that is connected to the Zumo) and solder a butt connector to each wire (doubling up the 2 grounds to your current single ground) and shrinkwrap the connections (both individually and then a larger one around the entire group). That way you'll have a waterproof cable splice...

Or, if your 660's mount is like my 550's, and you're using the 3.5mm output jack on the mount to connect, you can also just get a new 3.5mm male connector to directly connect to the waterproof connector without the wire splice.
 


Nice to know this is possible in principal then. I'd let someone else loose on that though - I'd only bugger it up.
