I am planning a cross country trip this September [gonna be 7k-10k miles trip]. My rocket classic [2006 model] has 15600 miles on it and the last time I got it serviced was when it had 8000 miles on it. SO the last service was definitely not 10k miles service. When I called up my dealer for service he asked me if the 'valve adjustment' has been done on it during last service and I am not sure about it. Also the second valve adjustment is due at 20k which I think will be on midway during my X Country trip.
So I am not sure how to go about it? Any suggestions? Also if anyone has done X country lately, I would appreciate if u can share some experiences in terms of motorcycle preparation [technical/accessory/luggage ;) ].

Thanks!

For my part, I would have the service done before I leave including the valve adjustment since you are unsure if it was done at 10,000 and you will be on your trip at 20,000. I'd do an oil and filter change, complete service including rear drive fluid change, radiator flush and change if not done already. Also brake fluid change, check brake pads, change if necessary, check tires, etc. As far as luggage, take only, (in my opinion only), what you will need for four to five days max on the road and stay somewhere you can wash your clothing. Taking too much crap is a burden and the extra weight is only that, extra weight for you to haul around with you. Take a tire plug kit, tool kit with minimum tools, maps or GPS and most of all, have fun!

Thanks NativeOne!

"rear drive fluid change, radiator flush and change if not done already" I will ask my dealor about it. He also said 20k valve adjustment cannot be done before 20k miles. I am carrying a pair of break pads as back up as I replaced them 4k miles before. I am not sure what "tire plug kit" is though? :p

Also I am not sure if these dealors even do complete service? Need to find/prepare some checklist of things to be done for comprehensive service. Friends, I would appreciate some suggestions on this :)

Definitely get that service done. The next valve adjustment isn't due until 30k but you are obviously late now. They can check whether or not you need a fuel filter but at 22K, mine was fine. +1 on N1s recommendations. Then you can set out on your journey, knowing that the bike is ready to go. You might consider where you can get a tire change out should you need one.

Thanks Navigator, I am already replacing my rear tire [Metz 240/50/16]. Front tire looks good to me for another few thousand files.

..and a 'slime' (brand name) mini air compressor from wally world to go with the plug kit...what dealer ya using???..Manayunk Triumph in Phila is pretty good..they did my 10,000 mile service..checked the valves, they were all within specs..expensive though..about 7 hundred..but I did it mainly for documentation purposes should I ever need it..
