I was told conflicting info concerning adding a tuneboy to an 08 with OBDII. I currently have K&N filter with D&D 3into2 exhaust. Since I had to do something I had the dealer load the Triumph software for the changes. (triumph's "aftermarket exhaust w/o catalytic converter" download)
Does anyone know about/have added a tuneboy to an '08 Base model?
I have tech experience with cars and OBDII performance tuning, but I'm told that bikes are different and I really don't want to make mine unrideable by tinkering with it in ignorance.
can anyone explain to me what a tuneboy is and what it does? I'm used to just hooking up a laptop to a car and altering the timing/fuel/tps etc. Is a bike all that much different?

There is a huge forum here that goes into all the maps and such for the tuneboy and the PCIII. It goes back a couple of years. I has lots of info. I spent a while on it last night with the same questions you posted. Good luck. I am giving it a try on my R3T soon.

I wonder why my dealer is telling me that 2008's are different? now I'm really confused.

The Rocket3 Touring model is different. Frame is different as well as the power due to the tuning and some other things. I have heard airbox, intakes etc. From what I gather on the Tuneboy tunes forum, there was a lot of work on the regular R3 and then when the R3T came out there were tunes set up for it also. There are specific tunes for the R3T to help get some of the power back. I am going to get one to try and get a little better MPG. Don't really have anywhere to go fast. Takes me almost an hour to hit I-95.

With the tuneboy all you get is a OBDII cable with a USB connector on one end and a software key to unlock your ECU with the Tuneboy program. Basically it does the same as the Triumph tool, it loads maps into the ECU but you in Tunedit can edit the ECU map and reload it. There is nothing extra that goes on the bike. You can adjust fuel maps, timing, rev limiter, correct speedo, keep the secondary butterflies open all of the time etc. The Triumph tunes for aftermarket exhaust suck. They richen the a/f mix by closing the secondaries more dropping power. You can go to the Tuneboy site and download the software and tunes for free. That is the best way to figure it out.

Tuneboy works with all models and years. There is a different tunedit program for the Touring model. Your dealer is probably referring to a new series of tunes. They are all also on the Tuneboy site.

Tuneboy is just a program and a cable that allows you to download tunes into the ECU. The Tuneboy web site has all the standard tunes, including for the R3T as well as custom dyno tunes that Wayne at Tuneboy does on R3's with various exhaust and intake configurations. You can always try something and then go back to the standard tune. If you go to the Tuneboy web site, you will see there is a custom tune (20256_1) for the R3T with TOR pipes with the snorkel under the seat removed.

For the standard R3, there are tunes for TOR/cat bypass, jardines, unifilter intake, etc. There is no custom tune for a 3 into one into 2 (D&D). The Jardine (also 3 into 1 into 2) tune would probably be too rich. If you can find a good dyno tuner, you can create your own tune specific to your bike. Tuneboy also allows you to transfer a PCIII trim map into a tuneboy tune which you then load into the bike. Pig9r used to offer renting his PCIII out for this purpose. Since most dyno tuners are familiar with the PCIII, this is a good practical alternative.

By the way, your dealer probably loaded the standard TOR/cat bypass tune. How is that working? All of the standard tunes close the secondaries to various extents to limit power. Tuneboy allows you to open them 100% in all gears & rpms.

After all the reading I did last night on the tuneboy forum, the last two post made everything a lot clearer for me. I didn't realize it was not an add-on. GREAT!. Now I know I have to get it.

Willie,

I've run a number of tunes for the R3T. While each added power, some much more than others, depending on other mods, none increased mileage. In fact, if you go whole hog, and add the triple filters and the associated tune your mileage will drop considerably.

There is a tune available for the TORS (or D&D's) that simply takes the Triumph tune for the pipes and opens the secondaries 100%. That will give you more power in the lower gears and at lower RPMs. When I ran that tune my mileage was virtually the same as stock under normal riding conditions. Excessive twisting of the right handgrip will of course have a negative effect on mileage.

I don't really mind the mileage that much but the tank on the R3T is smaller than the regular rocket and I would like to get more distance. Having more power is alway a good thing. I like power. I do have a bad twitch in my right wrist that makes it go from straight to bent backwards whenever a light turns green. Maybe that is my economy problem.

I hardly noticed a difference, thats why I want to learn more about the tuneboy.
