Well this afternoon about 3, I finally got my parts in. I thought it was going to be the rear bearing and the cover gasket . What I got was the gasket and a big box for a single bearing. As it turns out for my $74 , I got the front and rear bearing, the rear cover, seal , bearing holding plate, and another cover gasket.
Took about 90 minutes to swap everything out and it is ready to go back in tomorrow morning . I did fine some interesting things. First the rear bearing which I thought was the real villian , turned out to be not as bad as I thought. The front bearing on the other hand was in real need of replacing. To be honest I thing that is where the bulk of my problems were. It had not started throwing cage parts yet , but I do not think it would have been long before it did.
The new rear bearing is sealed , and after it is installed and the 35mm nut is torqued , there is no play what so ever. As for the case & bearing plate , I have no idea why it included. MMy olld one looks good. I'll keep and give it to anyone who really needs it.
I do want to thank the guys thatr rendered a lot of help, and answered my dumb questions. Now it is just a matter of putting it back together , and hoping that I do not have to mamy spare parts.

THANKS AGAIN
Mick

I would change the casing, it's an updated part.
Could you expand on that a bit. I got the inpression that the wear on this bearing was the normal type. It has some rough spots , and was showing some slop. Might just be from being a bargin basement type.

From what I can gather the old rear casing was exerting preasure on the back bearing when the case was tightend up. Think they have just milled out a little deeper by a few 1000ths.

I have just had both bearings go at 130 Kph on a major trip around Australia, noise was unbelievable, instant and scary 40kms from the nearest town. Finally got bike to Triumph dealer who quickly stripped bike down, diagnosis was bad both bearings had totally collapsed (exploded) the output shaft and gears were damaged. Some parts of both bearings were missing presumed travelling around engine internals somewhere and the crankcase were badly damaged internally, the whole area within the output housing was covered in a fine metal paste.
New crankcases / oil pump / output assembly and gaskets etc plus full rebuild to cost approx 10K, yes thats ten thousand dollars it would never be the same bike and I just cannot afford it. Not sure which direction to take next, secondhand engine? buy a wrecked R3? are they available?, not in a good head space right now.
RIP MY R3

that sucks donkeyballs. engines are rare but can be got. nuts to 10k. i got one from a 18667 miles 06 model (black engine) a few weeks ago from US (for R&D purposes (-:)
are you UK/Oz/US? what model/year rocket?

there's a 08 touring engine on ebay US - http://www.ebay.com/itm/19058430456...cmd=ViewItem&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT&vxp=mtr
and a guy (Sandy) in Wales has one but does them on an exchange basis only so you'd have to hand over your busted one - http://www.triumph-ant.co.uk/engines4.html

The engine in th eUSA is from pinwall and it only has about 6k on it. It looks pretty good but you can not see the mounts for the floorboard rails. I would be asking them for pictures of that area to see if they got busted up. If not then its a good deal but if they are busted I would try for less money and then repair them. You can not switch cases with any other engine unless its both cases. The main bearings and some of the tranny shaft bearings are line bored which is why you can not use a lower case with a different upper case. Personally I would split yours open and see what the main bearings look like. If they are good the muck did not get pumped around the engine much. You can also cut open the oil filter for a look see. If you have metal everywhere you should see some laying in the head also if not it got filtered before it pumped around.
