What about it is not to your liking? It's one of the best QS jobbies around, slick and smooth. If yours is clunky and agricultural, it's not adjusted correctly.

Quick question will be if you have the gear lever as it is a different lever that is used when the shifter is removed. Additionally do you have the threaded shaft to replace the shifter.
