Time for a new ride

You make me feel old! My first street bike was a brand new 1979 Suzuki GS1000E my father bought for me when I was seventeen.

I have several bikes, including a 2005 Rocket and a 1998 Valkyrie. The Valkyrie is superior to the Rocket in every way, except engine power. It sounds better (with a Cobra 6 into 6 exhaust), it is more comfortable (both seating and ride), and it handles better (the low CG of the flat 6 makes a big difference). If I could only have one bike, it would be the Valkyrie.

BUT, every time I open the throttle on the Rocket I fall in love all over again. When I was younger I rode a Suzuki Hayabusa (loved it), but it could not leave the line like the Rocket does. Just twist the throttle and dump the clutch (at the same time), and it launches like a fighter jet off an aircraft carrier.

Regarding passenger comfort, my wife rode on the back of my Rocket for about 10 minutes, and will never do it again. The pillion is small and hard. So some kind of upgrade will be necessary for you.

The first year (2005) is the only year without a blacked out engine, if that makes any difference to you.

I bought my Rocket used in 2013, so I don't know about its history before that, but since I've owned it I had to replace the primary TPS (it would idle at 2000 rpm). Also the final drive unit (Triumph calls it the "bevel box"), a replacement for which I found on eBay (used). The front brake lever was soft and would pull almost to the grip, so I rebuilt the master cylinder. That's it.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My dad had a 98 Valkyrie with that same 6-shooter exhaust, that really is a nice sound! It actually drove me to get a similar setup on my Honda Magna with Cobra 1 into 1 quad pipes for the V4. Sounded pretty great as well. My 2014 Valkyrie sounds nothing like either unfortunately but can’t expect too much from most stock exhausts.

Speaking of exhaust systems what are folks doing with the 2.5L R3’s? I’ve seen a few out and about but haven’t heard what the stock pipes sound like up close.

Honda 250N Superdream in red. Ah, they were the days of not making the bends. slamming on the front brake in the wet, chain that loose came off, etc. I'm still here and don't know how. The bike died.

Btw, I take it that the master cylinder rebuild worked then? Mine has the same problem, and I have the yearly vehicle inspection coming up; we call it the MOT. It can fail with this, which means I can't legally ride it if it's not fixed within 2 weeks. Anyway, all the forums are saying that the only fix is the Roadster master; we all can see what they cost. Cheers.

Retraction - I reviewed my records and see my master cylinder wasn't rebuilt, just that the mechanic recommended it. He bled the brake and cleaned the calipers and it has worked fine ever since. Which is probably why I thought I remembered he had done a rebuild.

Cheers, I'll try that first. The lever does near enough touch the grip when stationary but stops on a penny. I just know the vehicle tester will pull a face. He can't really say owt as long as the brakes lock the wheel on that roller thingy.
