Swapping tins soon and need some feedback

yep, same here, I took mine all apart to get it painted...you might want to go ahead and change the fuel filter, I can't remember the part number but I posted it somewhere, I used a non triumph fuel filter from an automotive application..

Like Skip says you can get away without renewing ther gasket where the fuel pump goes into the tank. Should you decide to change out this gasket it will cost you approx 15 bucks. Just make sure you replace the two (10mm ID) aluminium crush washers that are used to seal the fuel line banjo fitting.

Well, the gasket and the aluminum crush washers were my concern. I don't mind spending the extra $15 for the gasket. And since I don't live close to any Triumph dealership, thought I would order those parts from Bike Bandit and have them shipped to me ahead of time. Thanks, TMac

Are you the the one who had the winning bid on flebay for the repainted hail damaged tins? Looked like a great deal.

Yeah, that was me. I've been looking for a set of black tins for over a year now.

I guess the seller didn't have a reserve on it. There was one other person who bid $350, so I kicked my bid up to $405. No one outbid me, so I bought them for $350 plus shipping.

Was a little skeptical about the paint until I saw them. Three coats of black and a clear coat. Very professional, except that there is a small chip in the tank on the left side and at the bottom down by the weld (I think someone was careless when packing them up.)

But all the parts look great. Ordered some touch up paint from Triumph, but at the price I got them for I can certainly afford to have the tank repainted.

Donno why he sold them so cheap. I guess it helps that I was in the right place at the right time.

I bought a spare fuel pump / sending unit off of ebay. That way I can switch back and forth faster. I reused the gas tank seal but applied a thin coat of gas resistant silicone to be sure. I've reused the crush washers before (1 time) but for 50 cents just save yourself the possible headache. I never used a piece of wire though. If the unit is angled correctly, it goes right in. Be careful not to bend the fuel indicator float arm!

Thank you! If there was hail damage to these parts, they were very nicely repaired. And yes, I do watch all the ads every day, and had to wait a long time (over a year) to find that deal. Would have been willing to pay a lot more for a used set that probably would have shown, at the very least, some slight wear and tear.

I just missed buying a set for sale on this forum early last year, but someone beat me to it (if it's a good deal here on R3 Owners.com, it will probably be sold within a few minutes).

Needless to say, I am very happy that I waited for the right deal, and that I didn't spend $2,200 that the local dealership wanted to charge to paint my old tins.

BTW, I bought chrome plated side covers to use with these. The black and chrome should kick the bling factor up a bit! :lol:

Buy some of that blue painters tape, and tape up all the bits that might come into contact as you install,

the rear fender as you negotiate it into place between the sides

the front fender as you slide it between the forks,

AND when you go to do the tank, be sure to have your handle bars out of the way and either secured or padded with a towel so they don't flop onto your tank..

ive had mine apart a few times, but just relax and take it slow and no damage will occur.

Painter's tape? Hey, that's a great idea! And yes, I do plan to relax...allow myself plenty of time...and really get into a Zen-like state of mind. Yeah, I think I may have to remove the handle bars from their mounting. Wonder if Rizoma risers make any difference. Yes, plenty of rags and towels around just in case.
