I am already starting to plan a Spring launch in Eastern KY Mountains. Already found the Mom and Pop motel to host and the rides will be spectacular. We will be tackling the venom trails that consist of the 4 routes below along with a ride on one the US most Scenic byways through the Red River Gorge.
The Rattler
The Rattler is coiled and ready to strike, beginning with a run of several mountains with ridiculously sharp and steep curves. The second half of the route is still twisty but with fewer changes in elevation and features roads less traveled. Alert riders will find American buffalo on the second half of the route. Riders take note - this is the most technically challenging of the tours! Total Mileage 72.1
The Copperhead
This route follows Quicksand Creek and features one long sweeping curve after another, punctuated by short straight stretches with several hair pin turns thrown in for good measure. Total Mileage 72.5
The Fatal Fiddler
This loop is a back-roads beauty! The roads are often narrow and quite curvy. The route climbs steadily in elevation until you are riding the ridge tops with spectacular views all around. You may even see ostriches and llamas on this route if you pay attention. The Fiddler weaves an intricate design up, over and around the back roads of Breathitt County, and then crosses briefly into Lee and Wolfe Counties before drawing you back to the center of its web. Total Mileage 75.5
The Black Widow
The Black Widow is an exceptionally scenic ride that is as curvaceous as its namesake. It begins with a series of steep switchbacks then settles the rider into a rhythmic groove of right and left-hand curves. You'll be torn between watching the road and the beautiful landscape. Watch the road! Total Mileage 54.4
Red River Gorge
One of the nation's special natural areas, Red River Gorge offers stone arches, caves, cliffs, ravines and waterflows. Designated as a National Natural Landmark, a National Wild and Scenic River and a National Geological Area, the landscape of this part of Kentucky offers scenic, natural and recreation experiences. And did I mention twisty roads.
Total Mileage Round trip Approx. 120 from our base camp in Jackson. http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/2482/
Right now I am just looking for date suggestions and try get a feel if there is any interest…
I can already vision the patches and tee shirts "Choose your Poison" across the top a circle divided into quadrents with a black widow, Fatal fiddler, copperhead, and rattler in each section. I bet skip a booger dave already have the presses going....
