A 1200 cc Sporty is a very different machine to an 883. Especially the 1200R models with the higher suspension. Trust me Bruce knows what he's talking about .. if he's getting rounded-up on the outside on a mountain road the Sporty rider knows what he's doing.

I have a friend with an 883 Sporster with the 1200 kit and all sorts of extras in it. He is not even interested in trying against the RIII. It really doesn't matter what speeds I can do with it. I just like the fact that nobody is ever interested in trying. :)

When I came back to riding after the youngest was grown up, Wife hung up on me at the triumph dlr! off to HD and a brand new 2006 xl1200c stock 100 mph flat out after pipes jetted carb and K&N filter 112-120 downhill pegs scraped going around corners 17000 miles in nine months. painful bike to ride but missus was goin thru the change. traded for NOS 04 fxdli with H.T.C.C. 1550 kit 100/100 club V&H pro pipe power came on at 3500 pure power. put fox shox on rear helped, brakes were same as xl but the extra weight of the dyna made them way inadequate. while the hp was only 100 the tq was around 118 and the motor was crack til it grenaded at 32000 miles redlined only once and had all the SE upgrades, lifters, springs, clutch, parts list was 6K. the problem was HD's pressed crankshaft, apparently you also need to invest in the S&S 3 piece crank, oh well. my harleys needed a lot of countersteer around turns and the extra weight of the dyna made the frame flex a little. If that bike hadn't exploded(twice) I would be blissfully unaware of the rocket but now I own 1 and the only thing I like better about my dyna was 15000 miles on tires and hydraulic lifters meant no valve checks. The manual compression release was pretty cool to. also EVERY harley has a screw to stiffen the throttle cable, like throttemeister only free!

Not saying any Sportster is a better bike than a Rocket .. in any way. Other than pushing it with a flat tyre I guess  Rocket is the best bike I've ever owned , bar none.

my niece rides a 1200 sporty...i can hang with her in a drag on my 81 xs 1100, but she wins by a couple bikes... and im a fat ass..

i seriously doubt a 1200 would even run with a R3...unless there was $10,000 worth of mods to the sporty...

My comments were in reference to Bruce's .. about a RIII and a 1200 Sporty on a twisty mountain range. I wasn't saying a Sporty is going to beat a RIII in a straight out away from the lights drag race. Tearing through a mountain range may be a different story dependant on experience and courage of the riders ;)

Yes T.C. Read my post correctly. I was talking about the average ride out of town. There's only so many traffic lights to drag race at. On the open flowing Hyway anything can get along 15 to 20 Klm over the speed limit and when it gets to the tight mountain roads the Sportster will have more ground clearance and be lighter to throw around. I've never owned a Sportster and don't intend to, I just don't knock something I know is a capable motorcycle in the right hands.

Maybe I'd prefer the Sportster if I was laying on the ground with a broken leg and it's laying on-top of you
