I need some help from the "laptop wrenches" out there concerning a slight issue with my FBG. She is a 2005 pushing 17 K and I currently run the PCIII with the O2 by pass, Jardines and the recommended Jar tune in the PC, under tank K&N, and the secondaries removed. The bike runs great other than some popping on deceleration which has never bothered me. The problem is in the idle. The bike will run great for about two months. When fired rev's to about 900 rpm and quickly settles in at about 500 when warmed. The problem first starts with bike only going to about 500 rpm when cold but still runs fine when warm. The next phase is the bike still hits 500 rpm but stalls usually at the first stop light when cold. It always fires right back up and soon as this occurs I run a 12 minute tune and the bike is fine again for another couple of months. Upon talking with TxRIIIRider in ES we found that our bikes had the exact same symptoms and I believe his eventually required a trip to the shop if I recall. (Dave please comment if I am correct.) Yesterday is what prompted this post. I rode the bike to work idling at about 500 rpm and it was fine. I went to start it to go to lunch and it would not idle at all. You had to keep her thumping with the throttle or it would die. The same thing occurred on the way home in the afternoon, but it started to run better when I hit my driveway, again idling around 500. I did a 12 minute tune today and she set and idled great all the way through the procedure. Since the 12 minute tune is only a temporary fix here, is this a PC tune issue or do I have a primary TPS occasionally acting up. I am going with the triple K&Ns under the claw in the next couple of weeks and this would be good opportunity to change the sensor if necessary. Thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Mine stalled on me a couple of times until I had the 20226 tune installed by the dealer. This set the idle up to about 800 rpm and also fixed my fast-idle problem. I was also getting a Secondary TPS error code (P0638) and the dealer fiddled with the connection and all is well.

Hey, let me know when you do the filter conversion. If you wouldn't mind the distraction, I'd like to come over and watch. (...and laugh...take pics...).

Is your PCIII the older style that has a wire lead going to the O2 bypass from the PCIII unit?

Brian,

I believe so. It was installed with the Jardines within a year of buying the bike. P, I know you are going say a Tuneboy would eliminate this little problem and you are right, but other than some popping and this little idle issue, the bike runs great. I am old and cheap and a TB may be in the future, but not right now. I also realize the tuning capabilities are limited with the PC, but with the filter mod will remapping need to be done? Thanks in advance P for any help. I know, I can always get a job at GEICO playing one of the Cavemen, but old farts really don't like change.

James,

No problem. No beer until the job is done. Well maybe just a couple to help us think. It could be a warm day and you certainly don't want to dehydrate. I'll shoot you an pm when I get the parts in.

I too have an idle problem and I too use the 12 minute tune to cure it. My bike seems to be more effected by diffenent gasoline formulations.

2 Years ago on the way to Smashville (and the Taliban 8), once I got into Virginia, my bike started running crappy and got progressively worse until I did a 12 minute tune outside Kitty Hawk. Then it was fine for the rest of the trip.

Gus wanted to install the upgrade tune when he did the engine but I asked him not to (and he didn't) because I'm getting excellent mileage and the inconvience of a 12 minute lobotomy every month or so isn't that big of a price to pay....at least for now.

One thing I'm curious about is the life of the O2 sensor. As the sensor degrades, it's signal degrades as well. I'm wondering what the replacement interval is. You know me, keep it stock. Play with the KLR.:D

Unfortunately everything I suggest you check, requires TuneBoy (or Triumph tool). First check ECU for DTCs. Second, reset ISCV (idle stepper control valve via TuneBoy). This re-syncs your idle stepper motor with your MAP sensor and TPS. Finally, while your symptoms ARE NOT classic bad TPS symptoms, couldn't hurt to check voltages of both primary and secondary TPS.

DO NOT FCK WITH YOUR IDLE SCREW!

George, the O2 controllers on the older PCIII's had some problems and I bet that is your problem. That is why resetting the adaptions with the 12 min tune corrects everything because the O2 contoller is feeding the ECU bad info. Dynojet has since updated them. You can buy one direct from them for $15. Just unplug yours and cable tie it somewhere on the bike and plug the new one in. It's just a resistor and doesn't plug into the PCIII. I use one with Tuneboy too.

If you are considering Tuneboy, now would be the time to get one. The AU $ is down to the US $ and there is a group buy going on now too Just put Nick Burns, next door, on it.

You are probably running a little lean with the triple filter set up because the PCIII canned tune for Jardines was with the stock intake. Two ways to resolve correctly: get a dyno tune (should take about an hour with the PCIII) or get a Tuneboy.

Yes, I ended up taking my bike to the dealer to have the TPS replaced and calibrated. The problem with replacing the TPS yourself, is only the dealer, or TuneBoy can be used to calibrate it. Now.. It has been mentioned that the secondary TPS is the same as the primary, and the two can be switched? I think the only difference is wire length.

Replacing the TPS fixed my problem.. for the most part. I still have an occaisional stalling condition on decel that I can't duplicate very often, so I haven't taken it in.

You say you're idling at 500 RPM? It sounds like your bike has not has the "recall" tune installed? My bike idles at 800 RPM. If you do have them install the recall tune, make sure they install the tune for a STOCK Rocket III. The PC-III canned maps are all based off the stock tune, if I'm not mistaken. The TORs/cat-bypass tune will make your bike run rich when running with the PC-III also. Now.. that being said.. I believe my bike does have the TORs/cat-bypass tune installed.. and in order to get my bike where I wanted it.. I tried the Euro TORs/Cat bypass tune on my PC-III and I am very happy with they way it's running right now..

After I install Jardines, I may go ahead and take it to a dyno shop.. I'm thinking that will also cure my occaisional stall on decel...

Thanks for the help!

I really appreciate all of the suggestions. I admire those of you that are proficient in computer based performance enhancement. At this stage of my life cycle I have already accepted that there are certain things I will never fully comprehend with the above at the top of the list, followed by women, how to cut reverse angles in crown molding, and true left wing Democrats.

Brian, I checked my O2 bypass sensor and it does not plug into the PCIII. I presume it is the old style design with the small black box with the flashing green light and cord. Looking at the new one the size has been reduced and the the cord eliminated with a direct plug in. HB and I installed the system in July of 2006 when the bike had 2300 miles on it. The PC has been going strong for almost three years and 15000 miles so I am very satisfied.

I think I have reached a tentative course of action for now. First, I checked the Triumph site under recalls and my bike is listed. I know it is for the updated tune so I will take it in, making sure they reinstall the stock Triumph based tune for the PC. Second, a new PCIII O2 bypass sesnor. For $15.00, even if the old one is still good it will free up some room under the side cover. Third, install the pod filters and book time for a dyno tune. The old PCIII system is who I brought to the dance so I am going to stick with it for awhile longer. However, I sure would like to hear some more about those "mild cams" from a couple of midwestern Captains. Those in conjunction with a TB could be one nice future project after my stock market investments come through.
