Waited until the end of the day (CT) to post this.
Not one thread about one of the most important dated in history--it was seventy one years today that Britain declared war on Germany thus starting WWII, it was 27months later before Americe threw it's hat into the battle but not one mention ????????????????
Well, not to ignore the importance of that date, but Labor Day weekend is not about Britain declaring war on Germany.
Most Americans probably don't know that Britain declared war on Germany. We sort of remember Pearl Harbor....... and that's about it.
My grandfather on my dads side, was a Royal Marine during WWII. Went missing in China apparently.
My dad was born during the Blitz. Lots of stories from the older members of my family.
Not to split hairs, Scot, but WWII actually began 2 days earlier, on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland and began the September Campaign. It was this incursion which lead to the British declaration of war 2 days later, on September 3rd. The invasion ended on September 6, 1939, after which Germany & Russia divided and annexed Poland.

Americans tend to recognize victory, not the entry into hell on earth. And we threw our hat in long before Dec 1941, along with our planes, and our ships, and our cashish.

No hairs to split Germany did invade Poland on Sep1st and were given 48hours to withdraw when they did not war was declared Sep 3rd
The annexation of Poland and the non aggression pact between Hitler and stalin was a brilliant move from Stalin as it gave him some time to rebuild after the idiot destroyed a lot of his great military minds in the 30s

Now Dave, how long have you been a member on this board? If you had posed this question way back each year "since" you have been a member then we might have been more on top of it. Hopefully next year we'll keep an eye out for it and surprise you.
With me being home for good at this time next year...I'll make a special note of it (I just hope I remember to write that down or you'll be beating me on the head next year if I don't).
Sep 3rd is ingrained in the Brits mind just as Dec 7th is in the American minds the main reason that I posted it was because on a local talk radio show earlier that day one of the questions was(to win a coffee cup) what happened 71 years ago today and not one person phoned in, I thought it was sad that people forget such dates of great importance I know times move on but certain dates shall stay with us forever.
Sep 11th
Nov 11th
Sep 3rd
Dec 7th to name but a few
And if I have to put years to these dates I will kick your arse.
One little bit of information the final payment that Britain owed to America for the Lend Lease program from WW11 was payed in full --the year 2006. Took us a while but we did pay
