I've tried the Progressive 440's and 418's, the 418's have adjustable damping and that seem to make the biggest difference in ride quality. I can turn the damping way down when it's just me and up when the wife rides or it's loaded with stuff. It makes for a really squishy ride but it's very comfortable over sharp bumps.
I always suggest shocks for the R3 with damping adjustment on top of the adjustable preload.
