Repacking the Jards

I finally got around to repacking the Jards on my 08 R3 ,a friend said the noise was getting intolerable and they were making a screeching noise at high rpm.

Someone who fixes HDs recommended using fire blanket,its cheap and easily available ,so thats how I did it.
It took 4 square metres, 2 per side and then I wrapped it with adhesive backed aluminium insulation tape to hold it in place.
In retrospect I may have to add some more fire blanket as I dont think I quite have the thickness of the old insulation and I think the exhaust gases may balloon it out.
Ill wait and see.
I put the baffles back and held them there with self tappers,it should make them easier to remove than drilling out rivets and I can uncrew the self tappers without removing the whole exhaust.

No real problems except one of the baffles was stuck in there and the extraction process ripped one the flanges from the baffle. The local exhaust shop did a nice job of straightening and welding it for $20

The original material is a one piece type,similar to industrial lagging, and tied up with fibreglass string to hold it in place.This leaves a full length seam which the exhaust gas will eventually find its way through.

It began to sound and run like crap after about 50klms ,but I had some time to take a closer look this morning and found I forgot to tighten the O2 sensor and it had rattled loose

The Jards were an enigma to me. I got mine from N1 with relatively low miles and found them to be way too loud. I really liked the "graceful" contour of the headers though and the overall look. I in turn sold them to another forum member but afterward thought that perhaps I was too quick to do so. There must be a couple of generations of Jards. N1, Gorgerider and I encountered a guy in Oregon who had just bought a used Rocket with Jards installed and the sound was superb, deep and rumbling without the loud crack that mine had. Perhaps I should have tried a repack before selling them.

Of interest, you still use your O2 sensor. I have TORs with a hanso custom tune and the O2 sensor installed. I'm still on the fence about whether or not disable it.

Ive always believed it was mandatory to run the o2 sensor,but I dont really know much about them. In any case ,the cops here have been having a blitz on bike exhausts and o2 sensors are law
