It first started acting up after 600 mi and then about 600mi after both times the dealer messed with it. I replaced all the clutch internals except the baskets and will know more down the road. If it keeps behaving I'll never know.
All the information we have so far is back in this thread.
I do have some random theories and will try to articulate those later this weekend.

Being on my phone at work I will say this though. If the 3 10Nm bolts holding the release plate and spring tension are loosened the only way to get things back right is by taking everything apart and reassembling. When doing that there needs to be just enough tension to prevent the innermost plates from dislodging and still have enough movement to be able to line up the plates with the outer basket and spline. This is tricky and the reason the manual says to do this with the outer basket removed to line things up initially. But that doesn't line up the spline so during final assembly there still needs to be enough movement available while the release plate bolts provide just enough tension.
The applicable pages in the manual have very good explanations and drawings.

..... But that doesn't line up the spline
I've never had the clutch apart, so bear with me, could a piece of flat stock the right width and thickness (the thickness of a spline) be used to slide in and align the plates with the basket of the bike?

I don't know what you mean but no. With enough tension to hold things in place while allowing for sliding/rotating of the friction plate ears it takes both hands and fingers to insert the inner basket while fingering those plates and slowly work it in place. It's actually really simple but hard to explain, one of those things that becomes obvious when you're doing it.

The next time someone does an oil change could you please take a picture of the area behind the expansion tank because I don't remember how that fuel overflow hose was routed.

Seen it a "million" times, but I think (memory ?) it routes up and over the filter and then points down....

Your bike is cleaner than mine

That's kinda was I was thinking since at the end it snuggles up to the filter at the bottom. Btw those radiator shroud clips were no problem for me probably because I don't have hobbit fingers...
