Hi,
During my DS initiation I took some pictures of the shaft drive unit on the floor and the wheel drive gear. I must say that the castings are very nice, solid, and heavy.
Inside of the unit is very, very clean and nicely greased on the tail of the shaft. The wheel bearings are from Taiwan. Very simple to get at this, but don't drop the Hyperdrive on your foot, such as my Jedi mechanic did. It will hurt…
don't wat for that square tire to wear out before you look and grease them splines again. do it every 10,000 miles at the most. Very few pieces of equipment ever die of over lubrication
once a year is good if you don't put 10,000 miles on it a year.I do mine every tire change its jsut a 15 minute job and will save you from screwing up the fdifferential and the drive shaft which both are pricey and you have to pull the swing arm to chang the drive shaft which take a good amount of time.
The need to moly grease the drive shaft and rear wheel hub splines is well documented on here but what about the spline on the other end of the drive shaft near the UJ? does that not need maintenance or is it fixed to the gearbox output shaft some how?
