Output Bearing?

I just noticed yesterday, after a 200 mile run that there was noise coming from the tranny or rear end of my bike. I have 5K on the bike. I am having a problem pinpointing the noise, so I found a gradual hill, and turned the engine off and rolled for a mile. The noise is a kind of grinding with a snap every now and then. I don't have a problem shifting. There is some vibration in the foot pegs even with the engine off and just rolling.

Any ideas? Sounds like a dealer visit?

It sounds like your king wheel and pinion are not meshing properly especially as you have vibration with the engine off. I would double check your wheel bearings at the back. If you can raise the rear, slowly turn the wheel by hand and you may feel a tight spot on rotation, a bit like a chain drive bike with a stretched chain. I would take it back to the dealer if that is the case. Very carefully or trailered. You could also drain the dif oil. Drain it into a clean container and feel with your fingers for fragments of metal. You could even use a clean magnet in the oil, to see if you can detect any metal. This will be your dif gears failing.

I got the bike in the air today and verified that the rear end is making the noise. While turning the wheel, it sounds like metal on metal.

I purchased the bike at the Triumph/Victory dealer in Joliet, Illinois on New Lenox Rd. Does anyone have experience with their warranty department? Will they pick up the bike while under warranty? Provide a loaner?

Anyway, I doubt any dealer will pick up your bike for free, but you should get full warranty coverage. If you have towing in your insurance, submit it to them after you get the bill - I did this once: my dealer charged me $75 and I had a check from the Ins. Co. within a couple weeks

I recently had a similar noise (scrape, scrape,scrape) at the rear wheel it was so faint that it was only detected with no outside noise. After taking it to the dealer for a second time he caught the problem. Triumph said they knew of the problem on my '06 (that a bearing at the rear wheel that was put on backwards..an oilseal that was not exposed to the bath...or something like that)...actually the factory stood behind other tranny repairs as well..your problem may be different but I guess that I'm saying that if the dealer is a good one the factory seems to be willing to stand behind the customer....Good Luck!!!.

JF, I don't have specific experience with that dealer, but mine gives me a loaner if I ask. I had the bearing problem at 11K mi and it was described the same: put in backwards and not getting lubrication. Sounded like something was scraping - I even looked to see if something was stuck between the frame and the wheel. Took a couple days to tear her down and put it back together. Hope you're back on the road soon.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the output bearing was in the tranny? Does anyone know if the bearing that is talked about as being installed backwards in in the tranny or final drive....both?

The possibility of both can occur, seem's someone on the assembly line was really not with it

In my case the dealer described it as the Torsion Shaft Bearing.

I'm bringing it in to the dealer tonight. Service rep mentioned something about a transfer case seal. He said they are backed up for two weeks but will try to get it in quickly.
