Recently had a goldwing, valkyrie, vtx 1800, now R3. Bought it knowing it had the rattle can type noise.
Took it to the dealer. He put in timing chain tensioner spacer, no change, adjusted the valves, no change, put in new style timing chain tensioners, no change. So I am riding with the noise. Only 8400 miles on it. Other than that it is the best riding bike I have ever had. Like the way it tracks smooth and straight. Power is insane.
Both bikes not even broke in yet in fact you are both probably on the original oil I have about eight times your milage on my 05 and not a sound from it.
Is the sound always there or does it go away afrer it warms up a bit? It could be the oil pump drive chain. Mine use to have it if I let it sit a day or two. 77k miles and running good rhough. Im about to put a thousand miles or so on it next week on a trip to Oklahoma Bike Week.
Welcome from Perth W.A.
High assembly tolerances ? is it quieter when you load the clutch ?
At the 10K service maybe try a good 15w50 synthetic engine oil..

No sound when cold at first start up. Start to hear it after it warms up. Only makes the sound at idle and just above. Seems like as I ride it with the new tensioners it is getting quieter. Might be my imagination.
Went ahead and got the new chain and bottom sprocket. All quiet now. Does not seem to have any other issues. Transmission shifts are very similar to Honda VTX and Valkyrie. Just a little thunk and it is in.
