Motorcycle Towing Insurance

Ok, I know this has been discussed before. If not on this forum then on the Official Triumph one. It was a couple of years ago and at that time we had MTS. We never had to use the insurance and quite riding any long distances from home so discontinued that particular insurance.

I am getting things lined out for the Maggie Valley trip. Google maps has me with a minimum of 1196 miles one way. And that is provided I don't route myself different to avoid cities like Dallas. I am riding solo so far. I am not a roadside mechanic by any means and my mechanic is staying home. So am thinking I should get the insurance started again.

Now the problem. I am looking at MTS and MRA. The options are written different and confusing to me. MTS is broken down by the first dollars on towing. MRA is broken down by mileage (1rst 35 miles) and then discounted rate per mile after that. MTS has different packages. 1 - first $150 or 2 - first $300. And they have and emergency plan that says it will pay for certain parts minus labor. Since I have never had to pay for towing anything I have no idea what the rates would be, so I can compare the apples vs oranges way they are written.

Do you guys have any recommendations, suggestions, or experience with this? I was looking at these two companies because they are specific for motorcycles. Because as all of you know hauling a bike is different than hauling a car. I won't need to get the service to take me back home. I would hate to see the towing bill on that. All I need is to get to a decent town to wait in or a dealer to fix the problem. Which ever the situation calls for. Bear is prepared to come get me if I have a serious problem.

I have roadside assistance on my insurance policy (Geico) at a rate of $10 a year. They'll jump the bike, bring fuel, etc... or, if it can't be fixed roadside, tow it up to 75 miles.

On yours it is in conjunction with your bike insurance? I had insurance quoted by them long time ago and they wanted to charge me triple what I was paying with my existing company.

I guess in a way I am asking how far the first $150 or $300 will get me. If it will only get me 35 miles then then to go with the other policy (it is cheaper).

I pay a little over $500 for both bikes ('08 Rocket and '09 Tiger) including roadside assistance. Progressive & State Farm quoted me almost double for the same coverage. I haven't checked any others.

I haven't had to call a tow truck for anything in a while, but I believe that $150 will get you further than $35 miles. Of course, it depends on where you are too. I think it's around $75 - $100 for around 50 miles around here.

Check with getting roadside assistance on your motorcycle insurance, most companies offer it pretty cheap. I know nationwide has it. I have auto-owners, and they offer it. I believe progressive and allstate do too. Also, if you're a member of the AMA, they offer it (I think it's free with membership).

I actually have AAA Plus RV . . . it covers my bike and trailer. (The trailer behind my bike) You just have to make sure you let them know you want someone experienced at hauling bikes and not winnebagos.

BTW . . I live just a couple of miles off I-10 just into Florida (45 miles) so if anyone needs a stop off point for the evening . . we have room. San Antonio to here though . . . 12 hours by CAR. I'm about 8 hours from Maggie Valley.

Sunshine: I have roadside assistance and full coverage, liability and uninsured motorists coverage, (due to the fact I also live in Texas where so many uninsured motorists live), and I have Foremost insurance through Farmers. I also have my cars and home through them as well. I have two bikes insured, the 07 Rocket and a 05 Screaming Eagle Fat Boy. You may check with them and see what their premium would be.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I will check into some of them. My bike insurance is actually through MRA. It is paid for and doesn't renew until end of October so trying not to switch insurance at this time. Just looking at the towing options at this time. But you gave me some ideas. Thank you very much for your help.

Dave, wish you was going to. But I understand your situation. Its also a shame that Snuff and the guys from Houston/League City are can't go either. I really wish Bear was going but I understand why he can't at the moment. I would wait until he can go next time (maybe), but don't know how easy it will be for me to take a vacation for awhile after first of year. I think my co-worker is retiring real soon. Not sure what will happen about a replacement for her. So figured I better get me a good vacation in now.

I am looking at option of riding with the OK guys. But if I did that would have to take probably one additional day. I have family around Tutle OK so could spend night before launch at one of their homes.
