Here's my flatlander's story about Trail Ridge Road.
Back in the mid 80's I rode an 83 Yamaha Venture. You remember those, back when they were Goldwing-killers. (I really loved that bike!)
My riding buddy worked for Rider Mag as the Mag's Touring Club Coordinator and at the time they had him on a brand new 85 Venture. So we decided to hit the V-daze rally in Steamboat Springs over the July 4th week.
After attending the rally we headed east towards Trail Ridge Road to stay with a friend in Lyons. Beautiful day, bikes running well, eating Goldwings right and left. We're up on Trail Ridge Rd whipping along above timberline when we came to a downhill section that ended in a nice left hand sweeper which curved back uphill. Right a the mid-point of the curve I spotted a marmot (sp?) (groundhog looking thingy) not a foot from the tarmac. I completed the curve and pulled off about 1/4 up the road, grabbed my camera and trotted back downhill to get some shots of the rodent.
Of course, the critter was gone by the time that I got there and the full effects of 14,000+ feet of elevation slammed my flatlander lungs. To make matters worse, I turned and looked 1/4 mile UPHILL to where my bike was parked with my friend laughing his ass off at the sight of me staggering back up the hill. An oxygen bottle would have been a welcome sight about then. A half hour or so later I was back in condition to continue our journey.
That's my Trail Ridge Road story and I'm sticking to it.
