My state of Massachusetts has just introduced a bill to allow lane splitting. Just curious how those of you who's state allows it, feel how safe it is. My state has some of the worst drivers in the country,if you ask me it will be like suicide here...!! I've only done it once illegally in Chicago because the traffic was horrendous.

i split lanes on the 405 in ca between castaic and lax for many years, only had trouble a couple times... basically you get to set your odds of success by how fast you go and how fast the traffic is moving when you split... i rode a tall bike with really good braking ability... since my splitting was done before the mass market had smartphones, in-lane wobbling wasn't as much of a problem... you just need a 6th sense for dumba$$es who are going to shoot into another lane the second an opening breaks even they are only going 20mph...

Lane splitting has been quasi legal in California for a long time now, i've noticed that depending on which part of California I'm riding in lane splitting can be reasonably safe, or an a$$ puckering experience, Here in the bay area where I live, most people are used to seeing motorcyclists splitting lanes and will move over if and when they see you coming. However I have ridden in the Los Angeles area as well, I noticed that the lanes are more narrow there than they are here and the drivers are much less courteous and would even attempt to keep me from passing.

Every day on the radio I hear about at least one motorcycle involved incident on the bay area freeways. It is my opinion though not proven to be fact that the majority of these accidents involve sport bike riders who most of the time are not lanes splitting safely but are zipping through traffic at a high rate of speed, motorists never even hear or see them coming before it's too late.

I have been lane splitting for years I always do it carefully, I never go more than five Mph or so faster than the cars are moving. And if traffic is moving along at 30 miles an hour or better I Generally don't lane split at all. And all these years I have only had one incident and that was on my rocket three touring where I clipped a guys mirror as I went by.
I still get nervous every time I do it though.

It never ceases to amaze me what I see people doing as I'm passing them, cellphones, iPads, newspapers, looking down into their lap at something while not even looking where they're going.
Eating cheeseburgers while looking at their cell phones...., the list goes on and on.

Not legal in Virginia, but if you are trying to avoid hitting something or escape being hit they will not bother you. Likewise they will usually ignore a bike going down the shoulder in a standstill, cause they know air cooled engines tend to overheat in heavy traffic.

Not in Texas where I live. Don’t think it’s legal but I would have be an idiot to do it.
Billybob Redneck would run you in the car next to him just for fun.

Yep, I think if you were just trying go get ahead almost anywhere, some numb nut would open a door in your path, or smash you like a toasted cheese sandwich into the next car! For me it's an emergency maneuver and I will wait in traffic otherwise.

Bin legal in England forever and a big reason to own bikes , especially in cities . Altho the guy in the video will meet a nasty end if he does not tempre his behaviour ! It is not legal to ride in the emergency lanes in this country or the hard shoulders and most bikers with half an ounce of sense know that these lanes are strewn with debris and broken glass . Also , the driver who gets a sudden flat or an engine overheat will pull into those lanes without a second glance ! Filtering at speed is also a game of chance , especially in stopped traffic , as many a driver has jumped out to quickly chastise a child in the rear seat or to check a light is working and most won't even think to see you coming ! Not to mention the cigarette ends , scalding coffee or maccy D boxes ! As mentioned before , you do develop a kinda sixth sense and once gained , ignore at your peril !

I did some research again and it is still not legal in Michigan. It would have its advantages especially in slow or stopped traffic. I have never done it myself as I worry some 4 wheeler will see it as like cutting in line at the store checkout. My luck he would try and run me off the road.....as if they don't try that once in a while anyway. I'm not sure the beasts large footprint would allow for much lane splitting anyway.

No way would I do what is being done in the video. One 4 wheeler lane change and you're screwed.
