My ride just got her 16,000km check up, a few shims but everything else fine.

My buddies is just in, but has a cam chain noise that goes away after warming up. This started to occur in Sturgis.

It got less pronounced since then, but it still take 20-30 seconds for the sound to go away. PS it never made any noise before sturgis.

Tensioner?

The dealers "master mechanic" stated "they all make that noise... it's normal.

I've never heard any Rocket have this start up noise. Although I've only heard about 12 different bikes start up todate.

Does anyone else have this condition? Has anyone been given this standard line from the dealers "master mechanic"? :?

Cheers

Mine has cam chain noise when I start her up, but what you have to listen for is the chain rattle once you get above 3K on the tach! Thats when you know you have a problem. I went through a long drawn out process getting my bike fixed and it included the cam chain (stretched) and the surrounding parts as well as a few other items. But what I noticed after all this work had been done is the noise I was hearing from the cam chain and only after 3000 miles! Just to be sure I wasn't hearing things, I went to another dealer and had the mechanic there listen to it. He agreed that there was something in what I was saying. So I took it to the dealer that did the warranty work on the cam chain and they readjusted it and yes I was right!

Mine made cam chain noise before she warmed up since forever (over a year at least) but after I had my cam sprocket replaced and a new cam chain put in recently I don't notice any noise. A little noise in a cold engine is normal. It's like RudeDog said, watch out for the noise that don't go away or is worse at certain RPMs. Usually means something is too loose in the cam chain or sprocket.

You guys with the older machines also need to make sure your cam sprocket is upgraded to the latest version. They're prone to breaking which mine did after I supercharged my bike but they break in stock machines too.

'05 with 8,000 miles on it. Bad cam chain "paint can rattle" at all RPM, worst around 2,000 RPM. Replaced crank sprocket and keyway under factory warranty, quiet as a church mouse still with 11,500 on it now.
Ticking and whirring noises totally normal and acceptable. Clunks and rattles from a cam chain is NOT!
