Anybody planning on going to Sturgis? I'm planning on going and find myself not really that enthusiastic. But, it is one of those things in the bucket.

If you're gonna go to Sturgis, you have to ride it.. not trailer. The ride is what it's really all about.. I've been twice and have had some super great adventures on both trips that are just those moments you remember. My favorite adventure, was coming back from Sturgis in 2002 riding down Hwy 83 with my buddy James.. when a bi-plane crop duster flew down, tipped his wing to us, and "rode" with us for a few miles.. :) Let's see, also outrunning this giant spinning storm in Kansas was exciting! I was sure to outrun it, but I had to slow down to keep my Harley riding buddies in my mirrors!.. lol There's so many stories and I've always enjoyed it..

Sturgis itself, has become a giant commercialized flee market.. I myself like to party some, so we usually hit a concert at the Buffalo Chip camp ground, but we camp at a quiet campground in Rapid City where we can actually sleep.. :) The best times are riding the roads around Sturgis.. seeing all of the sites.. spending time with friends..

I MAY get to ride up again this year, it's been 4 years since the last trip... but it's too early to tell at the moment.

Check out my home page: Dave and Dawn's Home Page for some pics from my previous Sturgis trips.. :) Most are G rated.. but there are a couple of body-painted chicks in there somewhere..

Thanks! You've added an element of excitement that I needed. I'm planning on riding and pulling a camper.

Hey Ken,

Two of my sons and I are wanting to go also. But we are a little far out to get real serious about it. You are probably right though, if you don't camp and are going to be looking around the area for hotel accomadations, We might even be to late now. That gives me something to start trying to put together. And I agree with TxRIIIRider, if you're going to go you need to ride to get there
A couple of friends went 2 years ago and said that on the way up they seen some temps around 105 to 110 degrees.
I sold a RV to my brother and deleivered it to him in Reno, NV in the summer of 04 and drug my Road King Classic behind the RV. I unloaded the bike and told my brother to sell the trailer and send the money to me at the house. I took Hyway 50 across Nevada & Utah to the west side of Colorado. I stopped for fuel there in CO. and seen a sign that said Aspen, so I hung a right and went thru Aspen and on over the Continental Divide and dropped into Colorado Sprgs from the west. Western Kansas baked me. I don't know how hot it was but it had to be all of 110 or so. That trip was just me and the bike and probably the most fun I have ever had, well at least with my clothes on anyway.
I will work on it and see what I can't find for hotels and I will let you know. If I find something for my group, maybe we can all ride up together.

Oh, did I forget to mention that i am not really interested in going the week of the rally.. We are wanting to go the week before it starts and before the big crowds show up. Just a thought.

I went in 2006 a month BEFORE the rally. I feel I made a good choice in NOT being there when all the unwashed masses showed up a month later. All the benefits of the area without all the ya-hoos...............

Have fun, I am sure it will be something to remember.

I will be going but taking the long way to get there from Washington and will no be IN Sturgis, I'll be in Spearfish for a few days. I'll probably go to the hill climb and in to the rally for about 30 minutes, the rest of the time will be spent riding.

It does sound like it could be a fun time, but being as my trip was my first one on the bike out there, I wanted to enjoy the lack of crowds out west that are EVERYWHERE in my part of the country.

I'd love to go sometime, but not during the rally. I went to Daytona (5 hours away) a couple of years ago for the first time since the early '90s. All it did was remind me of why I quit going.
