Want to say howdy to all the R3 owners here!
I'm thinking of joining the club. Little riding history, I started off with a '81 Zuk GS850 in about 2002. Great old bike, had to lay it down in the rain one night, and it was no more.
Next up was a 2007 pearl white M109r. Gorgeous bike and had some pretty good power. But no good for 2 up riding in stock config, and didn't have the heart to mess up it's looks putting bags and fairing etc, so I traded for a C109r which was better for 2 up, but not nearly the looker or the thrill that the M109r was.
Still craving more power so added ZX14 to the stable. That was a blast, but I didn't care too much for the sport bike riding position or high rpms to get the power. Someone cut me off real bad one day and I had to lay that one down too. Messed up my back real bad and took 3 years to recover to where I'm ready to climb back on the horse again.
This time I'm looking for a commuter cruiser. Something I can drive 60miles round trip to work everyday if need be. I've looked around and I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the Honda F6B (more expensive, but super reliable, and can put gobs of miles on with no worries.), and the R3R, which is really calling my name with the massive HP and torque at low rmps. The M109r had a lot of torque and HP for a cruiser, down low where I like it, but in the end I still wish it had more. The R3R sounds like it's just what I'm after performace wise, with the kind of low rpm stump pulling grunt I'm after. I'd like to put a corbin fleetliner fairing on one and some beatle bags, and make an everyday ride of it, with a little extra room to pick up a sack or two of groceries on the way home from work. I love the looks of the matte R3R with the racing stripes. Awesome beast of a bike.
On the other hand I feel like the F6B, while much more tame, and more expensive will probably give me a lot more trouble free miles and make for a better bullet proof commuter bike. I don't plan to flog he R3R if I get it, as my crazy riding days are in the rear view mirror. All that torque down low should make it a joy to ride every time I get on it, and not a boring bike as I think the F6B will be from mile one through mile 200K.
So it's a tough choice. I'm thinking the R3R should be pretty reliable and last long time too, given the huge under-stressed inline 3 motor, but I don't know how many issues the Triumph has had, what parts are going to cost when it's gets up high in the miles. Also stories of the clutch cable breaking scare the crap out of me. In short, I worry the R3R is gonna be fun for a while, then get real expensive and become pain to maintain when it get's older.
I think the Honda will be boring from day one, but reliable as the sun, and will and last forever.
I'd love to hear from some of you guys with really high miles on your Rocket, and your thoughts between the two, for whoever has the experience with them. Sorry for such a long first post but thanks for the info ahead of time!
