Hey guys

I have an 05 R3. Started it for the first time Sunday, started right up. Took it for a long ride, stopped at the car wash and wash the beast then rode it for a couple more hours. When I shut it off and later tried to start it I got only a momentart chatter from the startup routine. I did notice that if I wobbled the key I could get the selonoids to chatter and the speedo to light up but as soon as I let go of the key everything was dead. Also My lights don't come on any more. I think it may be that problem where theres a cold solder in the ignition switch. Heres my problem. How the heck do you get that **** switch off the bike? Any step by step processes? And secondly has anyone thought about using an aftermarket generic ignition switch? They cost 10% of what the Triumph one costs ($350.00)

Help please

Thanks a ton
Jim

Jim,
Sorry to hear about your ignition problem, having been through this last fall, I might be able to lend some assistance.

The way that I did it...

(1) Removed the silver cover around the ignition switch

(2) removed the retaining bolt on the headlamps and dropped them down towards the front tire. At this point you should have a decent (not good) view of the ignition switch housing.

(3) Around the middle of the housing you will see two bolts (one of each side) with the bolt head all torn up. THat's because when the ignition was installed the bolt heads were torn off to prevent theft. The being said, you will need to do one of two things to get the little bastards out.

(a) Take a chisel and notch the bolt so that you can get a small
screwdriver in there to back them out
(b) push your handlebars to full-lock either left or right, get a dremel with a
cutting wheel and cut a slot in the head of the bolt to back it out.(This is
what I did, but I used the flexible extension as the dremel would'n't fit
nicely in the limited space)

I suppose that you could remove the entire headlamp assembly to get more room to work.

Once the two bolt come out and the wiring harness is disconnected, the ignition slides down and out.

It took me about two hours to figure out what I needed to do, and about 30 minutes to actually do it. I actually bought the ignition relocation kit and some Cool Tape and moved mine to the side.

You probably won't need a new one.

I had the same wire work loose on my switch. After I got it out, I took to the local TV repair shop and had it re soldered since my skills in that field leave allot to be desired. That was over a year ago and she is still going strong.

Thank you !

Man !!!!!!!!!!

You all ROCK !!!!!

Thank you very very much!!!!

Jim

(I'll let you know how it goes)

I'm not a happy camper

I tore the ignition switch off the Rocket and then tore apart the switch to find something interesting.

There was a solder blob just sitting in the bottom housing cap of the ignition and also the white wire solder connection looked as if it heated up and the solder dripped off. Upon further investigation I noticed the internal plastic contact part had melted enough to cause the contact to not be able to rebound - causing the ignition to stop working. I have called Triumph customer service yesterday and had to leave a message for Peter Carleo. I am still awaiting a call back. I'm going to try to post several pictures. It apears to me that there is a design flaw if these parts heat up enough to remelt the solder and the plastic.

Jim,

I'm sorry to say that it looks like you went about this the very, very hard way. You
didn't have to disassemble so much to remove the switch.

From here you have a couple of options:

1. If Peter calls you back and agrees to replace the entire key set (ignition, seat, tank), put everything back together and take it to your Triumph dealer. Triumph will not send you the key set to self-install.

2. If Peter does not agree to cover it (which would be a first that I've heard), then remove the entire switch from the mount by tapping some slots into the torque bolts that hold the switch to the mount. Since you have already separated the key section from the lower section, save the key section. Order a new ignition switch only (about $120) instead of the full key set (about $350). When the switch arrives, separate the key section from the lower unit and mount the new lower unit to your old key set. Reinstall and you will have a new ignition switch with your original key that matches the seat and tank. Reinstall with some small allen head bolts.

I talked to Triumph America today

I talked to customer service (Scott), nice guy. He told me to go to my dealer (Cleveland Akron Honda), those guys are great also. Anyway show them this part and the pictures and ask for them to file a good will claim with Triumph. I'm going to try to get to the dealer after work today.

As far as tearing everything apart, I was faced with several issues. Number one there is no power in my garage (apartment), and second it is ver dark so I was feeling nervous about taking the dremel (with a very very long extension cord-if it even reach) to that area, and third my eyes suck so it was actually nice to work on that part at my kitchen table. And it was kind of fun tearing it all apart (after I got rid of the..."CRAP, AM I REALLY TEARING THIS APART ?!!!"

I'll let you know what the dealer will do for me.
Thanks fellas!!!!!!

Jim:)
