Rocket III
Hello, any advice gratefully received...
I've got an 05 rocket. On cold startups I get a very short, no more than a second or so, but definite grinding noise when pulling away if first. No grinding in other gears, and no further grinding in first after that initial pulling away.
I've noticed that if I let the bike warm up for thirty seconds or so before pulling away, it is less likely to do it.
It's coming from the gearbox area, down by the left foot.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your time

Have you tried starting out in second gear to see if the grinding noise is persent then?
Thank you, I haven't, but I shall. Beginning to wonder if it might be the clutch... Doesn't happen if I pull away slowly, always happens on hill starts. I'll take it out and check the plates this weekend. 37k miles on original clutch, so worth a look at least.

My hunch is also clutch plates. When was the last oil change done?
is it like gear grinding or like brake pad grinding in the way it sounds?
What is the clutch feel like? Is it properly adjusted? The clutch pin does have a suspect history of issues if it's not adjusted correctly.

Oil change was last year. Really difficult to describe the grinding as it happens for such a short time, and I'm feeling it as much as hearing it.
Clutch feels ok, but have noticed a bit of a lag when accelerating hard.
Adjustment seems ok, but will check properly at weekend. It's still on its original clutch, so could probably do with looking at anyway. Thanks for your responses, I'll update next week when I've had a chance to investigate.

Could also be the starter is not fully disengaged and when you get going it then retracts
Worth a look. It's just a few bolts and ot comes off

Good call. Hadn't thought of that. I'll give that a look too. Thanks

If it was me i would change the oil and filter with the mobile.
Some oils are different.
Like was said changing the oil may stop a clutch chatter.
And you could also check for metal in the oil.
