Has anybody replaced the glass themselves, or know of any company that does this? Have speedo gauges needing new glass? Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you

Any luck with this Kim?
I have a smashed speed glass and I removed all the broken pieces which were really tightly packed between the casing. However Kim, it appears that the stainless steel rim/band has been factory pressed on, after the glass has been positioned and the only way it could be removed is by cutting the stainless steel rim/band in order prise the ring open slightly to get it off. Would you agree?
Of coarse then if you have new piece of glass cut the only way top seal everything is to use silicone. Yeah?
Wot say Mate?

Wingo, Sorry for the delay in replying. Got the ring off using the tool in the picture. Think you could fabricate a better tool with a flatter edge which would be a lot better on the actual clock plastic case. I kinda rushed it, but it does come off. Just keep going around and around the ring lifting a little at a time and the ring will slip off. Don't think you will need silicone, just one of those very small hammers that come with those cheap office repair kits to tap the ring back down so the seal is tight.

G'Day Kim,

Thank you for taking the time to post a reply including pics. I will give your recommendation a try. However, I'm a little concerned.
  • Once the metal chrome ring is panel beated and back together with the new piece of glass in place. Will the beaten dented ring with all it's new imperfections be visible when the plastic chrome cover is in place?
  • I trust the new glass will hold up and not break with taps to from a little pin hammer to flatted the dented ring?
I look forward to you opinion.

Best

if i was doing this i would use a small sharpen screw driver and put a bend in it near the end. i think that it will look like u used a screwdriver on it.:( but it would work tell u find a reasonable priced one.
if i were doing it i would try to use a large c clamp with a block of wood on the clamp and something like a piece of rubber on the opposite end then slowly press it together. if u have one side going on faster u can then tap the opposite side ON wood) with something like the plastic end of a screwdriver. hth herman
