2010 Rocket !!!
Hello again.
Right, to bring resident rocket scientists up to date on the outcome of my 'Stuck in first' episode.
It was indeed a dislodged selector shaft bolt that was the cause of this very time consuming fault.
30 odd hours to dismantle the bike to the point of lifting what was left off the motor.
Then split the cases to access the gearbox to retrieve, clean and put back in place, a bolt that should have NEVER come out to start with! (It took 3 minutes)
Then put the whole bloody thing back together.
Still, it could have been worse. Much much worse. I shudder to think . . . .

Anyway, after getting it all back together and putting another 600km on it, its developed what sounds like an air leak somewhere in air/fuel system that causes a cough and splutter at 1800 rpm or there abouts and mainly in 3rd gear. Noticeably worse when its raining.
All clips on the throttle bodies, top and bottom are tight.
New exhaust manifold gaskets, tightened as per.
Regular use of injector cleaner.
Any suggestions on what to check next?
