I purchased my 06 R3 in Nov of 2010. It suffered from the common problem of not wanting tostart in cold weather. The most frequent suggestion on the forum was to increase the CCA of the battery. Some said that it improved but did not get rid of the problem.
After looking at the writing diagrams I decided to start at the battery disconnect all leads in the starting circuit. When i got to the starter, I found what I believe is the problem. The connection was very dirty and had a good layer of crud between the starter terminal and the battery cable. I cleaned up, and put a coat or two of liquid tape on it.
Last winter and this I have not had any problems cranking it up. Granted the winters in Oklahoma are much milder than in upstate New York, but I have been starting the R3 inn temps much lower than i could prior to the fix.
I am not trying to brag , just paying the group back by pass along a fix I came up

Your the second captain I read about that found thier starter motor connection grubby. I for one will be checking mine as have once while inland in winter had trouble starting and that was every one was saying the odysesi battery was the be's knee's so I got one then the other day when it was not even cold it faltered as it was starting wichita made me think about the previous person who had found grunt terminals and now you are saying the sàme thing do I will check it out

starting

i never had a problem starting from cold till i fitted the eastern beaver headlight mod,now it wont crank enough to start it from cold.im going to fit a switch in the main feed to the headlights so i can turn them off till its running.im thinking before eb headlights turned off when starter button pressed, now its direct, the power is going to the lights as well as the starter.i may pull headlight fuse tomorrow before attempting to start her,if she starts it will confirm my thoughts........or will it.

If fitted correctly it should make no difference cos the starter relay cuts power to the headlights which is the power that switches the relays in the EB kit on so I am sorry to say that is not the cause unless you have faulty wiring / relays

thanks miksan,

i replaced a high amp battery from batteries plus about 3 months ago, and it still starts sorta lazy. i'm going to trace that lead to the starter too and might be able to get her to crank better. thanks for the heads up on the connection of that lead to the starter.

I have had a similar experience over the last few weeks. Its been cold here in South Wales but not as bad as some places (down to -3C) but very damp by night too. Could not start my 07 two weeks ago. The bike had been in the garage for about 10 days and was real cold. Would turn over but just not enough CCA to get it to fire up. Charged the battery (original to the 07) still no good. Traced the cables along and did two things - cleaned up the starter connection and vaseline and WD40 on everything. Then tried to start and it was like a different bike. I reckon it was the starter connection weak and damp and a bit gungy.

starter

It will confirm that Rockets won't start with the headlight fuse removed.

well this morning i removed the fuse from the battery feed that goes directly from the battery to the relays, and BINGO she starts.i think TO ROCKET must have meant the fuse in the main fusebox, not the eb inline fuse.i mean if it would not run without the lights how come eb do an option to switch off the lights ?
anyways im not convinced yet,its not that cold here this morning.
im going to have a look at starter connections later anyway
cheers all.

I did mean the fuse in the main fusebox. I didn't realise that you were referring to the E.B. in-line fuse.
