For about a month, my bike has been surging & stuttering on very small throttle openings - typically at 2000 to 3000 revs in 4th or 5th. Felt a lot like when you are running out of petrol on a carbed bike, and need to switch to reserve.
Didn't happen if I revved straight past through 3000 & upwards. No big deal, but a bit of a pain in traffic.
DannyBenson had exactly the same symptoms, and cured it with a replacement TPS.
Went to my dealer & ordered a new TPS (even though his little hand held machine thingy reckoned mine was perfect, just like Danny's dealer did).
TPS would be in stock by Tuesday
So, then went away to Nomads, in France for the weekend, Friday to Monday.
By Saturday, the problem became a lot worse. The stuttering & surging became so bad that the only way to ride it was at big throttle settings, which meant I had to ride flat out, brake hard, flat out again. Fun, but tiring.
On Sunday, we went for a decent ride out to a lake about 40 miles away, and on the way back, by agreement, Nomad really let rip with me following. Rode like a bastard for about 40 miles, never dropping below 4000 revs in any gear, up & down the gearbox, and scraping a good bit of the pegs on constantly twisting roads. - gave the bike a real good thrashing.
I wouldn't have noticed a problem at those kind of speeds/throttle settings anyway, and it was a good laugh to give the bike some serious welly.
Next day I rode home about 500 miles, mainly dual carriageways. On the first 200 miles, I noticed that the bike wasn't stuttering as much. On the last 300 miles, I kept the speed to around 100 to 120mph except for petrol stops.
Sorry to be so long winded about this, but here is my question.
My bike now seems to be completely cured. No stutter, no surging. Not at any speed, not at any throttle setting. Have ridden it every day since my return, and it's perfect.
Does this mean that the problem is sporadic, and may return?
Did the **** good thrashing somehow fix the problem?
Did the bike somehow re-learn a good setting for itself?
Went to the dealer, who has the TPS now in stock, and their advice was that if its running good, don't sod about with it. Fitting of a new TPS has been put on hold for a fortnight to see what happens during that time.
Anyone have any explanations as to whats happened?
