Incredibly old thread. Almost all the info in the early posts was wrong (sadly).
The Engine Number and VIN are totally different numbers and any similarity of digits is totally coincidental (and highly unlikely). While the VIN can provide some insight into model year, country of manufacture etc, the EN provides no such info.
Triumph uses the last 6 digits of the VIN for bike identification purposes but that is only to avoid the need to enter the full 17 digits every time.
