clutch pop

Need a little help here before I open the cover. Riding yesterday and the clutch went "bing". The lever went to the bar and nothing else. It seems that the clutch lever on the front case spun around. I removed the cable from the handle bar lever, pulled the lever on the case back to were it shound be and it went "bing" again. I hooked up the upper lever and I had a clutch for 1 pull then it went "Bing" again. I rode home 60 miles nonstop. thanks to syncros. Any ideas??

Lifter shaft or lifter piece. If you are getting it to pull the clutch open before it pops your rotation on the lifter piece arm is too much.
If you take the cable off the liftershaft arm and are able to pull the lifter shaft out of the cover then either it will be broken or the lifter piece will be.

My first guess from what you are describing is burnt lifter shaft if you are still getting the clutch to actuate before the pop/bing

If when you pull the cable from the lifter shaft arm and are able to pull the liftershaft out it will look like the top one in the picture Below if it is broken. The bottom one is unmolested



If it is not burnt nor broke then your lifter pieces head is broke off.

Easy job less then 4 hours if you know how to do it.

I pulled the shaft right out. So it's broken. Is there a better replacement then the stock? Do you repalce the other part that this connects to also?

Yes, one of the weak links in the Rocket motor. I'm on my third one. The good thing, I can now change one out with my eyes closed. Not really, I peek. How many miles on your bike? Just curious. I keep all the spare parts to do a clutch shaft and detent spring job, gaskets and parts.

I'm closing in on 65,000 miles. did you change the spring and lifter piece?

Lifter shafts have not changed sense 06 I will check for part number when I get home. With the exeption of the lifter piece listed below I alway order parts for at least 2009 models to insure I get the new

I would replace the lifter piece with this one


It might not show its for your bike as I think they origianted in newer ones but trust me this is the one you want.
You will also need a clutch cover gasket. As for the return spring inside I eliminated mine and went with an external one.


But if your stying with internal I would order one anyway as they are cheap priced.

Did not replace the lifter, it looked brand new. I don't think Triumph replaced it the first time it happened. The spring also looked good and was still strong. Its really an easy job. I'm not really mechanically inclined. Just put everything back the way it came off starting with the radiator. If you ever have to replace the detent spring the only non common tool you'll need is an impact and a 30mm socket.

Here is the difference between the one I use and the one that came in the bike 06 and up. I think the one I used was changed for the touring model.

how the newer style I use fits in the lifter shaft


how the older style fits the liftershaft


lifter pieces are cheap in price so ask yourself which one looks like it won't waller around and rattle as much? ask yourself which one displaces the load better across the liffershaft? use whichever you want.

thanks guys. My dealer has the parts in stock I'll attemp it tomorrow. What a differnce in the new lifter piece that will be changed

If you want to save soem time do not pull the front wheel or fender, instead lay a towel over them and just becarefull when pulling the radiator. ( do not forget to unplug the fan before pulling the radiator) when draining her pull the water pump front plate to let coolant out (you can save if you want) leave hose hooked to raditor and water pump cover, ot can come off with the radiator. pull other pump hose at the top pipe and all one bolt 8 mm head, then the two water pump bolts and the whole pump and hose can come off at once. the upper hose has a O ring around the pipe so you will just have to wiggle her a bit to get it out of the block. lube the O ring when you go back together. just pull upper radiator hose at the radiator leave hose clamp on the hose so you don't forget it. Pull clutch cover change parts. With 65000 miles on her coupled by the fact that you broke clutch actuating parts I would inspect the clutch fibers while your in there. do not over torque the clutch spring bolts or they will snap.

I forgot what year is your bike and if it is a earlier model did it have the update kit installed in it ever?
