I'm working with Blackstone Tek (maker of the R3 CF wheels) to develop a CF swingarm for the R3. They have already developed a CF swingarm for a popular sportbike, which will be released in 2009. They are confident in their ability to produce the part for the R3.

The stock R3 swingarm weighs 34 lbs. BST estimates the CF part will weigh less than 10 lbs. including steel inserts. IMO, this is the last, best place for weight reduction on the R3. Just as with the CF wheels, the weight reduction for the R3 will be much more dramatic than in any sportbike. While it will not contribute to improved handling like the wheels, the loss of nearly 25 lbs. will have a dramatic effect on the quarter mile times of racing R3s.

The CF swingarm will be priced at $3200 USD (delivered by Postal Express) for the first 20 units only. After that they will sell much higher at retail. We are now in the design phase, and soliciting input from R3 owners. So far the market desires oval side arms, and the elimination of the ugly "flat plate" structure. The nature of CF is that this part can be made physically beautiful with both high strength and light weight.

I realize that most here are "cruisers" with little interest in spending that kind of money. When we did the R3 CF wheels, many scoffed that BST would never sell 20 sets. History has proved differently, as sales have significantly exceeded that figure. I can envision R3 showbikes being "incomplete" without a custom CF swingarm.

Design suggestions are welcome, and anyone with possible interest in purchase please PM me with your email.

Very good news

Hello Hombre,
I have the cf wheels allready, and I love them forever.
Count me in on the swing arm too.....
Would it speed things up if I contacted BST directly, and told them that I want one swingarm ?
I got the wheels directly from them, and they know me well.
Can´t wait on the news, keep us posted

Fantastic Jan! You need not do anything at this point. The way this will work is once we have 20 firm orders, BST will request a $2000 USD deposit from the buyers. Then they will begin to cut metal on the molds. The estimated time from deposit to delivery is 6 months. With your order we have 4 firm buyers, and 2 possible buyers. That's not a bad start given the World economy. IMO, we can make this happen.

The exposed swingarm of the Palatina R3 enables the sweet vision of an oval arm CF swingarm with arch structure: hot looking, lightweight, albeit expensive.

Nice!

Cool looking bike. I am trying to save my coins for improved shocks!

I am probably not the market for these upgrades, but they do look good.

I have just received the photos of the CF swingarm that BST has built for a certain model of sportbike. IT IS FCKING MAGNIFICENT! Extremely sleek, very light weight & BEAUTIFUL! A very modern design... completely different from the stock unit. The CF swingarm alone makes me want to buy one of the sportbikes it's made for!

Unfortunately, Gary of BST has specifically asked me not to share the photos with anyone. I must respect this confidentiality, or endanger my relationship with BST. I can only say that if the R3 swingarm design is of the same caliber... we will have a winner!

As soon as Gary permits, I will share the photos. I guarantee they will generate excitement and sales for the R3 part.

Being reasonable

Have regretfully put my mildly souped-up Nov. '07 Street Triple 675 up for sale, owing to my back problem and the fact that, unlike the Rocket, it tends to worsen it. The proceeds should finance the green machine engine enhancements (you know which ones, Hombre), manpower and dyno time included. If there's any dough left, I might consider the CF swing arm;).

Excellent, Jamie! Somehow I knew you were the cutting edge type! Your possible order brings us to 4 firm orders, and 3 possible orders. Gary @ BST advises that he most likely can supply 3 firm orders from R3s which are unknown to me (possibly Palatinas). There is no doubt in my mind, that as soon as our "possibles" see the CF swingarm which BST just built... they will become "firm" (finances permitting). Theoretically we may be half way there, though I will try for "backup" orders as well.

I've been in touch with Hiro at MotoPlan in Japan, and there may be significant Japanese interest.

Ah so... there is very significant interest from Japan. MotoPlan is no longer MotoPlan, it is now part of CarbonDry Japan... a major CF parts manufacturer in their own right. They are VERY INTERESTED to see the BST photos...

BECAUSE THEY WANT TO COPY IT!
