Cam Chain Tensioner

Here's a question for you. What does the nut on the side of the engine do? If the cam chain adjustment is suppost to be automatic, why does it have a external nut or bolt? When I got my Rocket back from having the engine block replaced I noticed that it had a very small oil leak at the bolt, so I tightened it just enough to stop the leak. Does this have to be torqued to a certain poundage to work properly? Notice a rattle can sound,which I believe to be the cam chain, when first starting out. As the bike warms up it quits alot but can still hear it under hard acceleration. Any info on the cam chain works will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I had the cam chain gear replaced under warranty about 6 months ago and is quiet as a mouse now.

It should be tightened to 23Newton Meters = 17 pound foot.
