Buying used or new

Buy new + extra warranty - simples. Say 5 years of mechanical worry free ridding. And if it shyts the bed in that period it gets fixed properly (we hope) and you may never see that problem again. On the issue of gearbox failure a lot of the guys have certainly put there bike through their paces (@mr hunt in particular ) but guys like @cusso ken have been gentle and have gb issues - I think overall the issues are infrequent when compared to sales figures but that's just a guess.

IT seems to come down to clutch adjustment and faulty shifting causing missed shifts and rounding of the engagement dogs on the gears thats what CARPENTER has seen AND the fixall is undercutting the gears resulting in a slick and great shifting trans thats almost impossible to miss any shifts and we are dragracing with full throttle high rpm shifts at 8500 RPM with 265+ HP modded bikes running 8 sescond 1/4 miles at 160 mph

When I took my 2015 R3T in for its 500 mile service a couple weeks ago I asked the service manager about the transmission issues I have been seeing on the forum.

His answer," we are the only Triumph dealer in the state and we see quite a few Rockets for service. We have done some service kits on the older ones, but have not rebuilt any."

Now I may at some point eat my words, but the guy had no reason not to be straight up with me.

I will be updating the tune in my bike soon to unleash the 30 some hp that is being restricted and putting TORS on so I can hear the engine, but other than that the way she sits is just fine with me.

If I had an issue I know I would be here talking about it as others have. At this point I am putting my trust in the guy that works on them and riding on enjoying every minute of it.

YES talked with 3 dealers here to see what problems they had with ROCKETS and they havnt had any trans problems mostly repairs from accidents and custom additions like exhauts and sissy bars they also said they had a lot of problems with BMW and DUCATI

Hey all, I went around a blind corner on one of those rustic roads up in wi last weekend and popped a 4x4 atv dead center of their lane on my 1290 SDR. No injuries although I personally feel like a pinata after the party. I probably should have got the offenders info but being dinged and in farm country I just assumed responsibility and after they helped get my bike off the road I said bye.
Anyhow the frame's broke at the steering head and bike's a total loss and I have a payout coming, my question's come from owning an 06 standard and how the roadster compares specifically the suspension? my 06 made me insane feeling every expansion joint yet providing very little protection from pot holes.
Is the new tranny more reliable?
how's the footpeg position? I was told the rivco floorboards wont fit the R3R?
Can new maps be used or is the ecu locked?
I convinced myself the only person I was endangering on a motorcycle was myself and this one has me thinking.
YES a friend has a SUPER DUKE and one of his friends dropped his in a parking lot standing still and bent his chassis so bad they had to total his bike

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've not had any GB problems on any Rocket I've owned. 05 model bought with 3000miles was good to 33000miles until a truck t-boned it in 08,next 05 done 16000miles ,my friend bought it and done another 10000. Bought my 08 classic with 1000miles on the clock now got 55000 on it only probs have been Detent spring and Tps.Also got a friend with 100000miles on his 04 an no GB probs. I''m not a slow rider, an in my neck of the woods you got to use the box a lot. Rockets are great bikes!!! Think I'll buy another one soon,Got my eye on an 09 with 9000miles on it.;)

27,000 miles on a Rocket X bought in Sept 2015 brand new. No problems at all. I normally ride 500 miles plus back and forth to work on a open highway doing a average of 75 to 80 miles a hour. I do all my own Maintenance which included a valve adjustment job recently. The oil gets changed every 5,000 miles with Mobil 10-40 racing T. Recently installed Ramair and waiting on a full system exhaust from Paul. Went over to a friends house to check out his Rocket and pretty much figured out that they very well may have screwed up the valve job by not getting the cams in properly. This job was done by one of the local dealers. Other folks on here have taken their bikes in for valve covers leaking only to find a thousand or so miles the cover is leaking again. Mine is still not leaking after 1,500 miles later but then again i did the work myself. Sure that a few shops out there may know what they are doing but afraid that is not the majority. A lot of headaches can be avoided by doing proper maintenance and I do not believe some of the dealers are doing a very good job which is resulting in major problems. Even a simple clutch cable adjustment done improper from a dealer can lead to bigger problems later on. Thus far the Rocket X is the best bike I have ever owned. Most reliable, not to difficult to work on, and most of all THE MOST FUN TO RIDE.
HEY thats important to have a great mechanic available that has more expierience than anyone working on ROCKETS that puts a stop to the story telling and BS that goes with motorcycle forums and ED from CARPENTERS is the best out there when it comes to ROCKETS and hes very impressed with the Rocket and is surprised how much HP the stock drivetrain can take 500 HP and hes the guy who builds all the modded ROCKETS including the the engines for the TRIUMPH STREAMLINER that is being prepared for the BONNEVILLE SPEED TRIALS this summer he gets to see it all having modded over 100 + ROCKETS so whats with the Rockets on the forum why the talk of ALL the Rockets have these problems its just NOT TRUE so ?

Certainly in the 4 years or so I have been reading this forum "tales of woe" have surfaced. I do more reading than contributing as most of the time I dont have a clue as to what I am talking about! Am I happy with my 2010 Roadster? Very much so...would I have bought it had I done the requisite literature search, probably not. It was on of those rare spring days in Alaska when for some unexplained reason a man gets into his truck and goes out, driving around with no destination in mind....stops at a motorcycle shop for no particular reason and buys a Rocket. I didnt say to myself "well if your going to buy a bike maybe look at others-nope. Saw it, fell in love with it, bought it. It could have been missing the pistons and I would have bought it.

When I bought it she had 16k and one owner...I have 30k on her now and so far the repair list amounts to one "stator" not a simple repair and not cheap. My cam shaft gasket tends to "weep" and I have replaced it once. My second one is weeping too, but with the black engine the oil just kinda makes it look more badass. -Doug
