It is wonderful to see Wout progress so fast. I am sure it seems like an long time to wife and family. I wish a fast and complete recovery.:)

hey everybody - just a real quick update before i go in to see wout today.... the hearing test came back normal, so that is great news. they are still trying to figure out how to get the vision test done, but it is in the works. wout's white blood cells are back to normal, so he is responding well to the antibiotics. and the big news - he smiled a real "Wout" smile three different times when people were in the room cutting up yesterday! It was so great to see!! I love that smile!

Love,

Amy

Amy also told me that Wout turned his head yesterday when a nurse told him to. One doctor said that a good analogy for a head injury was taking a snow globe and shaking it hard then setting it down. It takes a while for everything to settle back down.

Hi everybody,

Sorry I haven't sent the update in a couple of days. Wout has been very weak, because the antibiotics have given him diarrhea. He has had a lot of visitors, friends and family, this weekend, which has been great. Yesterday, he reached with his left hand and arm for the right rail on the bed. Tink said, "What do you think he's doing?", and I said, if I know your dad, he wants to get out of that bed!" They are getting a longer bed for him, probably tomorrow, because he's scooting around and sliding down to the end of the bed all of the time. The staff keeps asking me, "So, how tall IS he, anyway?" When I tell them 5'11", they don't believe it!

Sorry there's not much more to report right now, but I'll be keeping you informed as things go along.

Thanks again for all your continued support and prayers! Keep them coming!

With love,
Amy

Hi everyone,

Today was a great day for Wout! The physical, occupational and speech therapy team worked together with Wout today, and he achieved the following:

Stood up with the team's assistance for one and a half minutes, then again for 30 seconds

Sat on the edge of the bed for 50 minutes, with their assistance, but required much less assistance and had greater trunk muscle control

He brushed his own hair and wiped his face with a washcloth

When handed the phone, he held it to his ear, and also dialed numbers, and made a vocal noise into the phone one time

When handed a balloon, he put it to his mouth and blew

He focused well on commands with others in the room, and with other things going on in the room

So, all in all, I would say he had a breakthrough day in therapy today!!

Now, for the big news - this evening, when it was just him and me in the room together, I was talking to him, and he started moving his mouth and lips and making noise. I couldn't hear to make out anything, but he was trying to say words!!

I am staying at the hospital tonight because of some quality of care concerns that I have, but we have been speaking with doctors and others at
UNC to see if we can get him back to Chapel Hill. They have an acute care traumatic brain injury rehabilitation center, and we are trying to get approval as soon as possible from the insurance company to transfer him there.

So, please continue to pray for Wout, and pray that his transfer to UNC will go through - the sooner the better! Thanks again, everyone for all the love, support, and prayers.

With love,

Amy

quality of care?

quality of care? what's up with that?:mad::mad: the good thing about all of this is that the progress is phenomenal ! good on you,Amy... keep going for Wout, cause he's working hard to get back to you..... and don,t let the staff push you or Wout around. this upsets me just thinking about it.

****. Sorry to hear about what happened, I hope he recovers well.

That's one of my biggest fears when commuting in Seattle. The far right lanes that are used for day parking open up between 4-6PM for rush our making some of the main roads (not highway, city streets) 7 lanes wide (3 left, 1 center turn, 3 right). 9 times out of 10, cagers will leave the far right lane open because there's always some a-hole that is still parked on the street taking up half the lane. Not enough room for a car but plenty for a motorcycle, and most of us use it to out advantage.

But, in their self-induced traffic jams, the douche-canoes will see someone in the center lane wanting to turn and they'll leave a gap for them, the only problem is that there are two lanes between what I can see and the person turning and you just can't see them or the gap left. I've lost count of how many times some asshat bolts across and I've had to lock it up to avoid them.

I don't mind the ones that leave the gaps, they are just being friendly drivers but the ones that bolt across with no regard for a fully open lane of traffic just pisses me off. The ones that go slow and make sure there's no one in the 3rd lane, I usually wave at to thank them for being courteous.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I spoke with the admissions coordinator for the traumatic brain injury acute rehab center in Chapel Hill today, and she said that the insurance has approved Wout's move there, but that the bed with the full-time sitter won't be available until Friday. So, she is going to reconfirm with insurance that everything is still approved with the transfer date for Friday, and hopefully Wout can go to Chapel Hill Friday morning sometime. Wout has been agitated for the past several days, and one of the respiratory therapist here who used to work at a TBI rehab center in another state told me to turn the lights down, and keep things as quiet as possible in the room. So, I am trying that, and it seems to be helping a lot. He is still restless and agitated, but less so than before. I may not be able to be in touch too much until Friday. I am staying here at the hospital with Wout until he is transferred.

Thanks for everything that you have all done for us. Please keep Wout in your thoughts and prayers. With his level of agitation and both of our lack of sleep, things are hard right now. i really trust and hope that the move to Chapel Hill will be the best thing for him, I just wish it could have happened sooner.

Take care, everyone.

With love,

Amy

This is the latest update I got from Amy. I am going to go up tonight and give Amy a break so she can get some sleep. I stayed with Wout last friday night also. He tries to get out of the bed, etc, constantly and if someone is not with him, they will sedate him heavily to keep him quiet.
