Last Wed. my friend, Wout, [Pronounced Vout.] and I were riding home from work together. We were in the right lane of a 4 lane road, doing the speed limit of 45. Traffic in the left lane was backed up as people tried to get on the traffic circle [Roundabout.] at Pinehurst. A driver in the left lane allowed a gap to form so a car going in the opposite direction could turn across our lanes. A 26 year old girl in a BMW decided to accelerate hard across our lanes right as we got there. Wout never had a chance. He left a short blackmark with his rear brake and then hit the BMW between the doors. He was thrown high into the air and landed hard on the pavement. I was a car length behind him. The speed with which the girl crossed our lanes carried her out of my way, so all I had to dodge was Wout's bike and Wout himself. He was taken to Moore Regional Hospital, which was only a mile away, stabilized, and air lifted to UNC Hospital at Chapel Hill. They perfomed emergengy surgery to repair a tear in his heart. Luckily, he always wore his full gear. They are keeping him in an induced coma, and only time will tell about any brain damage. They operated on his broken right wrist yesterday. On the bright side, he has no spinal cord injury, and was registered between a 4 and 5 on an awareness scale of 1 to 6. He also lost his 2 front teeth.
