battery question - optimate

How long will the factory battery last?(yeah I know, how long is a piece of string)
Mine is about 2 1/2 years old now, assuming it was fitted when the bike was sold at the dealer.
I thinking I might fit a new one at the beginning of winter,it will be 3 years old then and probably on borrowed time.

Average battery life from where I've read on other message boards, and experience is 5-7 years.

I'm still running the original battery from 2005, but it is permanently connected to an Optimate when in the garage.

I replaced my Yuasa after four years as a pre-emptive move, because I was heading to some very cold country on a run.

Three years later, it's still doing excellent service in another bike!! Bugger!!

My wifes BMW Z3 battery is the original from May 2001 and still good - been on a battery minder most of its life though. Have averaged 7 years on bike batteries - again, always on minders.

Good batteries generally last 5-8 years ime. But area where ambient temperatures fluctuate massively will see this reduce to 4-6 years again ime.

Cheepo "just to sell the vehicle" batteries last as little as 18 months. Here we have trouble getting the 18month nasties as there is a 2 year warranty insistence under Spanish consumer law.

I'd guess it depends on how often the bike is run, too. Batteries that sit doing nothing for weeks on end ,cause trouble.

the same would go for gaskets and seals. You'd be amazed at how much oil drips from reserve military vehicles; since they are dormant for periods at a stretch.
