Nice pics, in his early life the old man was an apprentice refrigeration mechanic working on the whaling ships based out of Byron Bay. He used to say that as far as they knew there was an infinite supply of whales and no one though twice about hunting them. Just recently before he died he used to say that the Australian navy should torpedo the Japanese whaling ships! How attitudes have changed.

It's a shame they painted it the sandstone would look good in a raw weathered state. Imagine the blokes building it in 1901 if you told them people would be flying around it with a kite strapped on their back one day. Brought back memories My first visit to the Byron Bay Light House was a school excursion when I was in primary school.
 
Saw a dozen or more whales from the lighthouse they were a long way out but they were jumping out of the water and carrying on like whales do.
