Anyway to Safely Lighten Rock Rims...?

They weigh over 21 lbs w/o a tire, and I feel it is a good source to look at for added acceleration by reducing rotational losses. A reduction in 5 lbs would be reducing +/- 20lbs of rotational mass (depending on where the loss was on the rim. The front would have similar results.

This would have a profound effect on acceleration (and braking if the rear wasn't so **** squirrely to begin with).

I just can't think of anyway to lighten them w/o butchering the whole thing.

Maybe Hombre (I thought he had a source at one time) or some other person can make them of my extra set? Maybe a group purchase to reduce tooling costs?
 
If we were going to do something with a group purchase I would wish for a different size rear at the same time. I would wish for a wheel size that had more tire options without changing anything else like ride height, stance or looks. Well, I said I would wish.
 
IF I had $2500 for each to blow on a
performance up grade, I think a supercharger
or turbo would be, more bang for buck , and
more of and eye catcher and conversation piece
@ bike shows with a much higher drool factor .
It still nice to have a choices though :!:

Hombre, I mean FTLOG! $5K for rims? Ughhh...that hurts! :shock:

If it was $2500 for both, for a one off maybe.

With five sets? It should be $2200 for both, and we should see 5 lbs front and 15 lbs rear-a massive weight savings...

I say this, not b/c I know the tooling costs-but I think I'm partially in tune for what R3 owners might be willing to pay.

I just find it hard to believe that no one can make us some decent sport rims, for a reasonable price, and get a good weight savings. I spoke with a car rim guy, and he is flat out not interested :cry:

Maybe if we get 10 guys together?

But man WHOA. I want to keep them the same size, since that was at least how the suspension was originally set up for. I'm also concerned about the strength of the rims (even though the sheer size will probably add a great deal of strength).

As you know, these ain't no 400 lbs sport bikes with 85 lbs of RWTQ...

Obviously I think R3 owners would add an extra pound or two for the added strength and streetability.

I'm in (price/quality/safety) withstanding Hombre.
