2005 Rocket 3 Frustrating High Idle Problems.....

Hey everyone - I have looked forward to joining for some time and wish it was for good reason's as opposed to this issue. I will soon post some pics of my rocket - as soon as I can keep it out of the dealer's garage more than 10 minutes.

I have a 2005 Rocket 3 that I purchased last year (Feb 2008) and have had a high idle problem ever since I bought it. It idles at 1500, 2000, and sometime's 3000 rpm's. I have had 2 New TPS Sensors put in by the dealer and they have virtually taken it apart trying to figure it out. I just had the last one put in a week ago then I took a 10 hour trip - everything was fine till I got back home this week and the high idle has started up again. The only thing that would affect performance or that has been modified is my custom slip on exhaust. New Page 1

Could this exhaust be the culprit????

My bike also starts to idle all the way down to 300, then 200 - and then stalls out as well. When I pull over and restart it - the idle return's to normal. The high idle then returns after 5-10 minutes on the road.

Can anyone help? Has anyone had this problem? I have seen a few posts with a few possible solutions - but no real sure-fire fix. Thanks in advance for your help.....

I do not know what they did - but Ridge Motorsports in Batesburg, SC, worked on the same problem on my 2005 Rocket. I have since put over 15,000 miles on my bike with no problems.

I hate to say it still sounds related to the Primary throttle position sensor, but that's exactly what it sounds like... still. I had the same symptoms and had the TPS replaced at about 35,000 miles. I'm at 43,000 miles now and have not had the problem reoccur. The exhaust isn't the culprit. I was running TORs/cat bypass and now I'm running Jardines.

I do know that the Primary TPS and the Secondary TPS are exactly the same, except for wire length. A couple of people have had success swapping them out I believe, but you have to have TuneBoy software to calibrate the TPS correctly, or have your dealer do it.

I too have had this problem. I sorry I'm not going to have a definitive answer; but I'm going to go out on the limb and agree with the TPS sensor and or throttle body balancing. Adjust the primary TPS fully clockwise against the stop; then run the 12 minute tune from stone cold. My sensor I believe is bad: CW against the stop=0.65v, and CCW against the stop=0.70v. The correct voltage is 0.60 +/- 0.02v. When mine was set fully CCW the high idle condition developed. It was an experiment I was running.

Thanks for your responses - much appreciated. I will definetly pass the info on to my Triumph dealer - I will also call the South Carolina Dealer and see if they can offer any insight.

It would probably be wise to pin the harness at the ECM and see what voltage is actually making it there. If they have already put in two new TPS sensors and it didn't help I would have to suspect the wiring harness or the ECM itself. A bad ECM is like a drunk, it tells you it ain't drinkin' but you can smell it on it's breath

Brand New Wiring Harness put in last year as well. It could be the ECM though. Thanks for your response......

I thought I was the only one !!! I bought by 05 rocket in feb 2009 ,first ride on it and it snowed ,much fun !!.bike ran great for a few hundred miles and the every time it got hot I would get a high idle problem also throttle response at closing it down was scarey to say the least ,hitting roundabouts at 80mph is no fun on rocket 111 , I have taken it back to the dealer half a dozen times and they keep adjusting sensors or remapping it but the problem will not go away and they reckon they have not come across this problem before, I am now worried about riding it again because it is a dangerous beast when it won`t slow down,and when really bad will not run at all below 3500rpm and even above that it is really rough and misses all over the place, now when I go to my dealers this weekend I can go better armed with info ,thanks guys..

Have them check the weak-ass ignition switch as well, since it could be voltage readings changing as the key jiggles. Prior to replacing it, I noticed Idle fluctuations, lights dimming, bike dying, battery not charging ... all kinds of weird ****. Once it was replaced, every little quirky, pain in the ass thing it did to annoy me, just went away.
OH, and if there has ever been or is now, something like extra lights wired in without a relay (dirrectly through the ignition switch), the extra amps can damage the switch and cause problems as well.
Hope they get ya fixed up for summer.

First off,
Welcome to the site.
Now, You my friend have a TPS issue.
Same exact thing mine was doing.
Got the new TPS, the one with the blue internals, not the black internals.
Triumph paid for it and no more fast idleing at 3000-3500 RPM's.
Oh yea, its a known problem so it doesn't matter if your bike is out of warrenty or not,
Triumph will put you a new one on.
Takes all of 10 minutes, but before you take off on it to take it home,
do a 12 minute tune on it yourself.
The tech put mine on and started it up, said it was all fixed and ready to go.
It wasn't, it started doing it again before I got out of Tulsa.
I rode it home P.O'ed.
Did a 12 minute tune on it and been running like a champ ever since.
