i am looking at purchasing either a 2005 r3 or a new 2009 r3. the 2005 has 3500 miles and would be less than 1/2 the price of the new but has windscreen, saddle bags, and backrest/rack. the 2009 i could buy otd for 14k. i have spend a fair amout of time searching the forum. i just need a little direction w/links and a few honest opinions. i repair/rebuild/fabricate my old trucks but this purchase is for a little freedom.(miles and miles) thanks, paul.

Paul. Unless you know the 2005 has been fully sorted - I'd be cautious. Early R3 owners can give you more details on here - but most of the "horror" stories seem to be on early bikes - and at 3500 it's barely used. Also well out of warranty. Just saying.

I have a 2009 that I bought "new" last year.

I have a 2005 I bought new in 2006. I have over 30K miles on it and had zero problems. That said I can't guarantee you'd have the same luck. It boils down to what you're comfortable with. You need to ask the seller if the 'upgrade' kit for the tranny was installed, you should also see if the owners manual has been kept up by the dealer (scheduled maintenance performed). Just use your common sense and research this forum (and the .net forum as well). Best of luck.

..this could help you with your decision..half price, low miles=deal...take it for a test ride..as far as the older models needing transmission upgrade repairs, jumping out of second gear under acceleration seems to be the red flag..if the tranny shifts smooth..go for the 05.....and welcome aboard..

thanks all for your imput. i have not yet received an e-mail from the owner. i think i might consider the 2005 if it has the upgrades. i will have to see what pans out. time to head out to the garage and organize/build shelves. i have a 300 ford six to put together for my 66 f250 and i need the garage decently organized before i start. i love inlines. paul.
