My bike is in for the cam chain gear replacement, it has 10k miles on it. My dealer said that he bet that the valves were OK but I told him to check them, we will see. My bike will be ready, I hope, in the next couple of days
Better safe than sorry. Even though they will likely be in spec at 10k, just get the valves checked. Your dealer should not charge the extra time (about another 1 to 2 hours) to adjust them if they are in spec, though it's is an extra hour or two labor to just to check them.
The Rocket is a performance machine and you really need to keep her in good tune if you expect to keep her running awhile. I don't think $300 a year is much to ask. Would you buy a new Corvette or Lotus and skip the recommended service intervals or bring it to a cheapo auto shop?
I didn't need valves adjusted at 10k nor at 20k but that's because they were put in spec at 16k when the engine got torn down. At 30k or about 14k miles after engine teardown about half my valves were loose. Not as bad a problem as too tight but should be adjusted.
Any you guys that adjust the valves yourself know where to get the shims cheap? Triumph charges almost $7 for one and you gotta have measured your clearances before ordering the right sizes. I'd love to get an assortment of shims so I'll have them on hand when I do the valves again. I don't like having the bike sit long for parts - story of my life.
