G'day guys and dolls,

My girlfriend is so enamoured with riding around on the Rocket that she now wants to get her own bike. (This is a girl who no more than 8 weeks ago held on like a koala and squealed so loud I could hear her over the sound of the Thunderbird 1700 fitted with hogslayers that we were riding at 150km full tilt through the only tunnel in Perth).

LAMS allows for 200hp/tonne so opens up bikes like the Ducati 659 and more specifically for S-girl (formerly known as Mrs Hunt or Traction Control) the Yammie XVS650. She sat on both and the V-star 650 custom is what she wants. Anyone here had any experience with this bike in particular or the V-Star range more broadly? I've read plenty of good reviews but have never owned a Yamaha of any description so any input on the bike and dealing with Yama Aust. is welcomed.

For the record she is ergonomically suited to the Yama as opposed to the Ducati - I was very disappointed for myself!! The 659 Monster is a great fun bike and I would have been only too happy to 'run it in' for her

Hey Hunty..
I think the V-star is a good learner bike (A couple of the guys Ladies on this site have had them) Richard's (CanberraR3) Amanda had one and so did/does Big Martys Mrs.

Triumph America . Amanda , Richards squeeze is looking at selling her.. upgrading to a Street Triple so i'm led to believe it's nearly new.

There's a 660cc limit as well as the hp/tonne limit - otherwise I'd be gett.. sorry SHE'D be getting a new Bonnie!

I have a 1999 Yamaha V- Star and I still ride it. I have never had any problems with it and she runs like a top. I ride the victory more but still live the yamaha

Signwriter ... 600cc on both sidecovers .. coppers wouldn't have a clue. Last time they pulled me up this dopey young cop asked me if it was a 1700 .. and it's got 2300cc stickers on the sidecovers.

If there's a 660cc limit and if you want a cruiser, the XV650 is a good ride. Fortunately in the ACT there is no size restriction and it just goes solely on power:weight, which means that even the big Harleys are learner legal. I like to point that out: that they're beginner's bikes. Faces actually go red! It also means that Bonnies and the America/Speedmaster are OK too.

Plenty of better rides than the Yamaha but given the size restriction it's not a bad option. A recent review I read on the whole Yamaha cruiser range rated the XVS1300 1st followed by the Virago 250. The 650 was last, with the comment that it wasn't as quick, didn't handle as well nor was as much fun to ride as the Virago. I work at a Yamaha dealership by the way.

Amanda's keeping the America for now. She'll be 'allowed' to ride a Street Triple at the end of the year and will make a decision then. If I have my way we'll be having 3 bikes.

i reckon the yammies are a good thing for lams reasons. decent resale too.

but if it is only for lams how bout a hyosung. at the cost of a brand new bike theres not much you'll lose when you out grow it.

Gotta agree. We also sell Hyosung. The GTs in particular (both 250 and 650) have good resale. The cruisers not so much, but at the price they represent good value and not too much to loose.
