Whats the best way to clean brake dust and pitting

I'm glad someone asked this question. I was just going over the "posts since last visit" before I tried my hand at searching for just this topic.

I have a terrible problem with the rear rim (07 R3 purchased new last June) I have 5.5k on it, and the rim looks like crap. I have tried cleaning it on the bike but my oversized (read fat) hands aren't much use in such a small area.

I had a "detailer" also try while on the bike. They look a little better, but not much.

I guess my next step is to remove the wheel and have a go.

If anyone comes up with tips, please post!

Keeping a good car wax on it will be your best shot for keeping status quo...the only way to restore is to remove wheel and rotor discs, sand out the machining marks w/400 then 600 grit/polish/polish finer/polish finer yet, then keep waxed. Any other coating (shellac/clearcoat) is only gonna' make the next polish job that much more difficult. Ultimate solution is powder coat or chrome plate.

I took mine off when I got the bike and wet sanded them and polished them. Now the dust just rinse off and no pitting due to nothing to stick too.
